I'm totally unfamiliar with any precedent for naming a category this way. I believe it doesn't fit into our naming standards; is there something I'm missing here? Jmabel ! talk 01:03, 18 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Is this the same as Category:Fernleigh, Cleveland? Anyway it needs to be disambiguated from Category:Fernleigh, Chichester, the other places at w:Fernleigh and quite a few other listed buildings in England. Crouch, Swale (talk) 12:54, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Looking at Wikipedia and Commons, it looks like Fernleigh (in Cleveland) was the only Fernleigh and didn't require disambiguation. It looks like I came back in 2016 and renamed the article on Wikipedia and created the category Fernleigh, Cleveland on Commons and shifted the photos into it, so I am guessing it was not unique at that time. So do whatever you like with the category Fernleigh. Kerry Raymond (talk) 07:50, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This reads like an article, not a category page. Previously it didn't even have parent categories; I've added two; they may not be ideal, and improvement would be welcome. I suspect that most of the text on this page should either be moved elsewhere or deleted outright. Jmabel ! talk 05:47, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. The text should be shortened to about two or three lines, just a short description so that visitors know what the category is about and what kind of files should be in it and which not. This thext looks like it is for Wikipedia, not for Commons. See Commons:What Commons is not#Wikimedia Commons is not an encyclopedia, dictionary, guide, or book. This is not a term used by the public. It was coined in 2011 as a critique within the only Engineering community. Here is a quote from a book of the person who created "stroad":

  • "I really was writing it as a way to push back at the engineering profession and get my fellow engineers to think about the bizarre things they're building," says Marohn.

The category should be deleted. Thanks Ooligan (talk) 18:30, 9 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Even though it's a term only used in engineering circles, that's perfectly acceptable to have a category for it. SWinxy (talk) 19:49, 9 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Keep Agreed that it is an engineering term for which there can be media to illustrate related articles and discussions, so it is a valid item to have a category for. As far as categorizing specific roads as "stroads", that is admittedly more problematic, but I don't think there is a problem with identifying the fact that a given 'street' is also considered a 'stroad' and thus categorized both traditionally (as a street) and illustratively (as a stroad). The idea that we should delete this category because it is an obscure engineering term most people wouldn't know/use seems a bit odd to me. Isn't the point of this to be educational? If someone wants to know more about what a stroad is (or is looking for media to support teaching about stroads), then this should be a perfect place to support that effort. What is the difference between a walkway and a footpath? If they are synonymous, then Walkways and Footpaths should be merged into a single category. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribs) 07:41, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Similarly, the distinction between Footbridges and Elevated walkways is also pointless. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribs) 07:45, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I am not a native English speaker, but I think (after a little bit of research) that:
  1. Footpaths are always on the ground and may be unpaved and may have been originated from people taking the shortest way through an area.
  2. Walkways are engineered surfaces or structures and may be elevated.
  3. Footbridges just serve to cross a river, railway, road or other obstacle.
  4. Elevated walkways may be longer and bring you across a wet field, a garden or mountain area, or just give you the opportunity to enjoy a marvellous view.
If that is true (I hope a native English speaker can confirm or correct this view), then they are all needed. Perhaps these categories should get good descriptions, which show the differences. JopkeB (talk) 10:37, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Oppose We have this come up over and over for categories. What is the difference between Category:Toilets (sanitation fixtures) and Category:Toilet bowls? What kind of files should be in one and which in the other? What is the difference between Category:Rubble and Category:Construction debris? Can they both have (more) clear descriptions? How do they relate to each other (parent-child)? JopkeB (talk) 10:06, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I think Rubble is the parent while Construction debris is the child. Per Wikipedia, rubble is "broken stone, of irregular size, shape and texture; undressed especially as a filling-in" and thus they may or may not be found in construction sites. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribs) 17:01, 25 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Sbb1413. So copying from EN-WP we get:

  • Rubble is broken stone, of irregular size, shape and texture; undressed especially as a filling-in. In EN-WP the parent categories are Building materials, Building stone, Natural materials, Building engineering, Stone (material). So nothing about waste or debris, it more looks like construction stones.
  • Construction debris is waste from the construction process, debris generated during the construction, renovation and demolition of structures, not only stone, but all kind of materials. In EN-WP (redirect to Construction waste) the parents are Construction, Waste, Building materials.

Conclusions:

  1. I doubt whether it is a good idea to make in Commons Rubble the parent of Construction debris, since that is not the case in EN-WP either.
  2. I have doubts whether the files in Commons match with these definitions, because in Category:Rubble I see more files showing debris than (re)usable stone. This also applies to the subcategories (based on a sample).

In Commons we make our own decisions. But it would be strange to give different meanings to words. So I think we now have to decide wether:

  1. We move the files to categories with descriptions that match their content (my preference). OR
  2. Give descriptions to both categories that match their files. In this case we have a problem, because the same kind of files are in two different categories.

What do you think? — Preceding unsigned comment added by JopkeB (talk • contribs) 25 dec 2023 15:35‎‎ (UTC)

Category should probably be translated (see Commons:Categories#Category names). Leyo 11:51, 18 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That depends on whether this is the official name of a specific movement (than it may stay) or just a category to gather files about environmental movements and their actions in the Czech Republic (then it should indeed be translated). But I cannot be the judge of that because I do not know the first thing about this matter. JopkeB (talk) 14:04, 18 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It is not the official name of a specific movement, it is just category to gather files about environmental movements and their actions in the Czech Republic. So, it can be translated. JPetrlík (talk) 14:59, 18 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I am actually unsure whether this category is not even redundant to the existing Category:Demonstrations and protests relating to environmental issues held in the Czech Republic. --Leyo 23:53, 18 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Keep both: this category may be for the movements (because it contains names, I presume of participants in the movements and of organizations) and the other for demonstrations. Personally I would like to keep both topics in separate categories. JopkeB (talk) 10:17, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The category name (according to DeepL "Czech environmental movement") is not specific to persons. Moreover, it can't be a subcategory of Category:Demonstrations and protests relating to environmental issues held in the Czech Republic, because this category seems to be more specific. Third, we need an English name. --Leyo 19:50, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No, indeed, this category name is not spcific to persons, but it also contains at least one organization. And a movement is not only about demonstrations and protests, so it should not be a subcategory of Demonstrations and protests... The parent, Category:Environmental movements, does not have a similar parent as well but has Category:Demonstrations and protests relating to environmental issues‎ as a subcategory, so it is the other way around. Yes, we need an English name, that is what this discussion is about. JopkeB (talk) 05:00, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Move persons to Category:Environmentalists from the Czech Republic. 194.230.147.178 07:33, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Conclusions and proposals

[edit]
  1. Rename Category:České environmentální hnutí to Category:Environmental movements in the Czech Republic.
    1. Move persons in this category to Category:Environmentalists from the Czech Republic.
  2. Category:Demonstrations and protests relating to environmental issues held in the Czech Republic:
    1. cannot be a parent, because a movement is not only about demonstrations and protests
    2. should be a subcategory, see category structure of Category:Environmental movements.
  3. Keep both Category:Environmental movements in the Czech Republic and Category:Demonstrations and protests relating to environmental issues held in the Czech Republic.

Should this category include both lower and higher education institutions? The Schools category says that it includes "educational institutions from pre-schools through secondary schools." Therefore, the "schools" that don't come under this criterion should be moved to Higher education institutions by subject, which is currently a redlink. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribs) 12:09, 25 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

However, if there are both lower and higher education institutions named "X schools" (say), then we would have "X pre-schools", "X primary schools", "X secondary schools", "X higher education institutions" (or "X colleges" and "X universities") and so on under "X schools", and "X schools" would be a subcat of Educational institutions by subject, which is also a redlink. What is the difference between Engineering higher education institutions and Technical higher education institutions? I found these two concepts largely overlapping, as I found little to no difference between engineering education and technical education. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribs) 16:46, 25 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Sbb1413: Technical higher education institutions is a sub of Career and technical education and Technical institutes which are not in the Engineering tree, so it appears that 'technical' includes, but is broader than, 'engineering', which is a specific applied discipline. Hence,
Keep Engineering higher education institutions as a separate and distinct sub of Technical higher education institutions. Josh (talk) 19:29, 30 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Closing the discussion with clear consensus to keep. However, I need more research to make relationship between engineering and technology. Since they are treated here as separate topics, the nominated category will be kept. --Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribs) 12:07, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think this category is erroneous. The only member is a category for a type of rail vehicle with this model number, but it's not a number displayed on the vehicles. Jmabel ! talk 03:29, 21 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Jmabel, you are correct that "Number 70090 on rail vehicles" and "rail vehicles numbered 70090" are distinct categories and should not be nested in each other, though some content may rightly appear in both. Categorize the sub-cat here correctly under the 'vehicles numbered x' category and make sure if there are any images showing the number 70090 actually on them (e.g. picture of a model number plaque on vehicle) those are also categorized in the 'number x on vehicles' category. If in the end, none actually show the number displayed then this category will be empty and can be speedy deleted. Josh (talk) 18:13, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Joshbaumgartner: I don't see any category names of the form "rail vehicles numbered…", so I'm not sure what you have in mind here.
This has exactly one subcat and no images directly in the category. - Jmabel ! talk 22:11, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel I was thinking of the 'aircraft numbered xxx' analog, but maybe that's not set up for rail vehicles yet. Fallback could be all the way to 'items numbered xxx', but frankly for a number like 70090 it might not be worth the bother, the fallback would be all the way to 70090 (number) which doesn't exist, so in this particular case, I'd be fine with just removing it from this category and SD-ing the category. Josh (talk) 22:20, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Joshbaumgartner: What about we get rid of this one, create Category:70090, and put the one subcat directly in Category:70090? - Jmabel ! talk 00:16, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel That sounds fine to me, though I think number cats are supposed to have "(number)" added, so Category:70090 (number), examples: Category:542 (number), Category:26471 (number). Josh (talk) 00:54, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It's been half a year, and the only two of us who have commented are now in agreement, so replacing this with Category:70090 (number). - Jmabel ! talk 01:48, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I believe this is intended to be about Revue de l'électricité et de l'électronique (Q29043679), and should be named accordingly (Category:Revue de l'électricité et de l'électronique, the title is a proper noun and should not be translated). However, I see only one of the five images in the category that has any apparent relation to that journal, so I'm posting here in hopes that someone has a better idea what's going on. User:Oliv'96 who created the category seems to be only intermittently active. Jmabel ! talk 21:13, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Rename category @Jmabel: It was probably a well-meaning attempt to follow category naming policy , but you are correct that in this case, the original title of the work should be used verbatim. Rename this and all the subcats to Panoramics of the countryside or Countryside panoramics to be consistent with the main category Countryside. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribs) 18:31, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Agree Rename. I prefer Category:Panoramics of the countryside because that is in line with other categories about panoramic photographs: they start with Panoram* (though it is a mess: Panaoramics, Panoramic photographs, Panoramas, but that is for another discussion). The category will be renamed to Panoramas of the countryside per previous CFDs. --Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribs) 10:05, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sbb1413: Which "previous CFDs"? Category:Panoramics of nature still exists, Category:Panoramas by subject is still a mess.--JopkeB (talk) 10:20, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sbb1413: You are correct that Panoramas of the countryside is the correct target name, per earlier CfD regarding panoramics vs. panoramas. The conclusion was to use plural noun form "panoramas" for the parent (all types of panoramic images), with subs using the adjective form "panoramics" or noun form as appropriate for the given sub-type of image (e.g. "panoramic photographs" or "black and white panoramas"). JopkeB is also correct that it is currently a mess. I have done some implementation there, but there are a lot of categories, and I've not had a lot of cycles for that particular effort lately. Josh (talk) 17:41, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@JopkeB: My apologies, I totally missed your question on my first response. The previous CfD I am referring to can be found on the talk page for panoramas at Category talk:Panoramas. Josh (talk) 17:44, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Josh, for the link. Should I rename this category again? Or is this a subcategory for which subs using the adjective form "panoramics" applies? --JopkeB (talk) 11:38, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@JopkeB: , yes, this category should be Category:Panoramas of rural areas with photographs going in a sub (Category:Panoramic photographs of rural areas) if you need to separate them from other types of panoramas. I suppose if it is all photographs, you could just rename the whole thing Category:Panoramic photographs of rural areas instead, and just create Category:Panoramas of rural areas as a parent if and when other types of panoramas are available. That's really up to you I should think...either way can be done consistent with the Modularity Principle . Josh (talk) 01:37, 26 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Joshbaumgartner and Sbb1413: Now I am confused: should it be "countryside" or "rural areas"? Because this discussion was about that issue (not about panoramics or panoramas) and the outcome was "countryside". But Josh used "rural areas" again. --JopkeB (talk) 12:31, 26 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose moving to "rural areas", since we use "countryside" throughout Commons. --Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribs) 12:48, 26 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sbb1413, @JopkeB My apologies!! I meant it should be Category:Panoramas of the countryside! I was just thinking about the 'panoramas' part of the name and not trying to change the consensus regarding countryside/rural areas. Josh (talk) 18:52, 26 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

An ugly practice but agreed that is the inertia for this kind of category so we should be consistent in our poor choice of word order unless we agree to fix it across the board (I'm not holding my breath on this one). Josh (talk) 18:45, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Maps of communes in Loire seems to follow standard naming of the subcats of Category:Maps of communes in France by department, but we also have Category:Maps of communes in Loire (department) (redlink itself but has 306 subcats). I do not know French geo/social/policitical topics. Are these synonymous, so that the (department) items should be re-categorized into the simple-named one? Category created on 9 November 2023 by User:Krok6kola. As far as I can tell, it is redundant to Category:Lokum, created in November 2007, and linked to en:w and wikipedias in other languages since 2008. I note that Category:Turkish delight was created by User:SpiderMum in December 2013, who just over an hour after creating it made it redirect to Category:Lokum; in 2018 Category:Turkish delight was changed into a disambiguation.

On the talk page for this new category "Turkish delight (confection)" I suggested it was redundant and should be redirected to the existing, well established used category Lokum. Krok6kola disagreed; I offered counter arguments - see Category talk:Turkish delight (confection) for details. Krok6kola still disagrees, so I'm listing it here for input by others. --Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 21:34, 10 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Either redirect or delete, assuming we see Category:Lokum as unproblematic. - Jmabel ! talk 02:23, 11 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel: What about the enwiki article Turkish delight (which Infrogmation added redirects to Lokumon on enwiki when he filed this)? And the WikiBooks cookbook Cookbook|Turkish Delight}} Aren't we supposed to at least support the images in an enwiki article and other Wikimedia projeects? And are you going to redirect all the images related to "Turkish delight", e.g. the two films, etc. under Category:Things named after Turkey? Or are you going to leave them without any cultural context regarding their name? And a few of those images were uploaded under "Turkey loves folklore or some such. Krok6kola (talk) 19:29, 11 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I did not "add redirects" to the en:w article; I'm not sure what you're talking about. The en:w "Turkish delight" article was linked to Commons category "Lokum" since 2008. On 10 November you unilaterally changed the Commons Category link to your newly created category "Turkish delight (confection)" with the comment "fix commons link" (as if it had been broken up until then?). I refrained from reverting you, I restored the link to Commons:Category:Lokum (where the majority of the media was located) in addition to your new category, with the comment "Link both at least until decision is made; has been linked with "Lokum" on Commons since 2008." (Confirmation can be seen at en:w article history [1].) Certainly we "support images" in en:w and all other languages - if something is/was not supported, please explain what. I'm sorry, I don't follow the relevance of the rest of what you say. My perspective is: For over 15 years, we have had one category (with included subcategories) for this type of candy. You added a different separate category for the same thing. Thus far I have seen no argument from you that they are not the same thing, nor that either should be a subcategory of the other. I think redirects and hatnotes work fine to address situations when the same thing is known by more than one name. I do not see how having unconnected categories for the same thing under two different names improves Wikimedia. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 21:10, 11 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Infrogmation: I looked at the article history and you were the last to add a redirect to Turkish delight. Krok6kola (talk) 22:43, 11 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Krok6kola: article history of what? The en:w:Turkish delight article? Could you please share a link to the edit you are talking about? Puzzled, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 22:46, 11 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Krok6kola: Possibly you're thinking of this edit of mine here on Commons, where I added a "see also Category:Lokum" hatnote (not a redirect) to your new "Category:Turkish delight (confection)" category? -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 03:23, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not getting into the en-wiki thing here (though, sure, go ahead discussing and clarify what the history is there); I don't care which of several valid names we use, but we should not have two different categories for the same concept, and someone should be able to get there by knowing either "Lokum" or "Turkish Delight", doubtless the two best-known names internationally, even if to me it's rahat (Romanian). - Jmabel ! talk 02:46, 12 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • This discussion seems to be getting stale, but as far as I can see the status quo is awkward and inappropriate. @Krok6kola: If "Lokum" and "Turkish delight (confection)" are not the same thing, please explain the difference. If they are the same thing, the categories should be merged. If one is a variety of the other, it should be a subcategory of the other. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 16:15, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What is this parentless category intended to represent? I'm guessing it is just Voronovich (Q109294063) and should be renamed as Category:Voronovich (surname), and given Category:Surnames as a parent category, but maybe it's something more specific. And also: Category:Moscow FOP cases/Plaques in Moscow. This FoP subcategory by city (Moscow) must be deleted. In accordance with the discussion here (regarding Kyiv subcat), there is no need for FoP subcats by city if there are no differences between the copyright rules of the city and copyright law of the city's country. Moscow has no FoP rules of its own (FoP rules are from Russian copyright law).

Note the subcategory here Category:Moscow FOP cases/Plaques in Moscow is too vague, as there are no case pages listed there but files themselves (treating the subcategory as just like other category for files). Unsure what is the purpose of that subcategory. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contrib's.) 18:08, 22 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
