Adapting to human environments is in the mosquito playbook, finding habitats in our homes and lives 🏘️ Tiger mosquitoes—Aedes albopictus—that transmit the dengue virus are particularly cunning. Their ability to lay eggs in tiny water-containing spaces, in multiple and diverse locations, lasting up to six months, makes them well-adapted to urban and human environments. By reducing breeding sites, we also reduce the risk of mosquitoes getting entrenched in our environments. In Rome, an unusual spot is providing the perfect site, as this story illustrates 🪴 ⤵️

Did you know that mosquitoes transmitting #Dengue mainly bite during the day – unlike those linked to malaria❔ About half of the world’s population is now at risk of dengue, well beyond traditionally endemic areas, with an estimated 100–400 million infections occurring each year. Preventing mosquito bites is the best way to avoid getting dengue. To protect yourself: 🟢 Wear long sleeves & trousers if possible. 🟢 Use repellents. 🟢 Check travel advisories before trips to endemic areas and find out about the situation where you live. In 2020, only half of countries in the WHO European Region had a national suicide prevention strategy. Since then, we have heard that many are working to change this! A strong suicide prevention strategy covers early identification and treatment, engaging the media, reducing access to lethal means, and improving children’s and young people’s skills to manage and express their own emotions. Mosquitoes are unpredictable 🦟 It makes them fascinating and difficult to track – as the WHO/Europe Region seeks to respond better to vector-borne diseases. Experts from #Italy 🇮🇹 describe ways we can control the vector - in this case two species of mosquitoes that transmit the dengue virus - and prevent further spread. Rising temperatures across the Region due to climate change, combined with rain and increased humidity – conditions more favourable for the mosquito vectors – are likely contributing to the increase in cases. Find out more 📹 👇

Words matter—use “died by suicide” or “took their own life” when talking about a suicide death online or in the media. Stigmatizing language like “commit” can make it harder for people to speak up when they are struggling. Want to know more? https://lnkd.in/gq9XagVV #WSPD2024
