How do you transform a huge conventional refinery into a renewable and circular solutions hub? “With many individual steps and adjustments,” says Neste’s Jori Sahlsten. Here’s one of them: We are currently building new unloading facilities at our refinery in Porvoo, dedicated to handle circular raw materials such as liquefied waste plastic or liquefied discarded rubber tires. Unlike crude oil, these raw materials require permanent heating to stay liquid. That’s why we’re building an unloading arm that comes with an integrated heating system, for example. The new logistics infrastructure is expected to be completed in 2024. Just in time for when we finish construction of our liquefied waste plastic upgrading unit, which is currently being built as part of chemical recycling project PULSE.
