Gender equity is backsliding, and the rights of women and girls are risk. From The Guardian: "Almost every country in the world agreed to targets to achieve gender equality by 2030 as part of the UN’s SDG initiative. Yet in the past few years there has been a widespread failure concerning progress on women’s rights, which have declined in a number of countries:" https://bit.ly/3yYCGxj

In a new article, James Nardella of Last Mile Health and Maharshi Vaishnav of Educate Girls reflect that the experiences of our two organizations have proven that big bets can lead to real growth in impact -- but to enable the systematic change we want to see in the world, our best bet is a long bet. For problems like the billions of people who lack access to even the most basic healthcare, or millions of girls in India excluded from education, there are no quick fixes. We call for "patient capital and long-term backing [as] the boldest bet because it will lead to sustained change." Read more in Stanford Social Innovation Review: https://bit.ly/3ZhdIDU

“If we as doers are willing to make decade-long commitments to our constituents (children, mothers, families), then we need the same bold commitment from philanthropic #donors.” The debate over big bets continues at ssir.org with insights on how to improve this bold kind of #philanthropy from James Nardella of Last Mile Health and Maharshi Vaishnav of Educate Girls, two leaders at organizations that have received multiple big bets. “Patient capital and long-term backing is the boldest bet because it will lead to sustained change. If we can shift our mindsets and plan for longer doer-donor collaboration then we have a better chance of equipping local governments and communities to address their own needs, edging our way out of business, and changing the world for good.”

As health systems face a new strain of mpox, professional community health workers will be vital in responding to new outbreaks: educating communities, identifying cases, and ensuring patients receive the treatment they need. A well-equipped, well-trained community health workforce is essential to disease response. We must make professional CHWs (#proCHWs) the norm.

I’m incredibly proud to share this story of transformation from our work at Last Mile Health in Ethiopia. Mathewos Alaro, a religious leader in his community, had been struggling with worsening eyesight for years, which hindered his ability to read and teach. This affected not only his work but also his sense of purpose. Thanks to our dedicated community health workers, who were trained in our new non-communicable disease (NCD) module, Mathewos was screened for vision problems and provided with eyeglasses through a partnership with MoH, Livelihood Impact Fund and RestoringVision. Now, he can read easily again, and as Mathewos himself says, “These eyeglasses have given me back my purpose.” This is more than just a story about restoring vision—it's about restoring hope and purpose in our communities. It exemplifies the impact that targeted health interventions can have on individual lives, and it fuels our mission to reach even more people across Ethiopia. I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our partners, our team on the ground @Ruth Driba, and everyone who supports our work. Together, we are making a difference, one life at a time. #LastMileHealth #HealthcareForAll #NCD #RestoringVision #Ethiopia #readingglasses #livelihoodimpactfund #CommunityHealth #TransformingLives
