In an article on transactional sex by adolescents published in Frontiers , Jhpiego authors Mary Drake and Kelly Curran examined the relationship between adolescent girls and young women and older sex partners. These young girls and woman account for the largest proportion of new HIV infections and have a higher risk of HIV acquisition than males of comparable age. The findings emphasize the need for targeted, youth-friendly strategies to link adolescent girls and young women at high risk of HIV to prevention interventions, such as PrEP, and address their sexual and reproductive health needs. Our study team in Tanzania investigated HIV seroconversion, and its associated factors, among female sex workers through a unique way—using data from a routine, community-based HIV prevention and sexual and reproductive health project. Among this group of FSW, the team found a high incidence rate of 8.6 per 100 person-years. Factors associated with seroconversion included age 35 years or older, unprotected sex, STI symptoms, and alcohol consumption before sex. These findings underscore the importance of tailoring interventions for FSWs to prevent acquisition and transmission of HIV. https://lnkd.in/exhyuBq2

In early 2020, Uganda’s 22-month school closure due to COVID-19 led to increased teenage pregnancies and limited access to family planning. Teddy Kevin Nabuzale and the Mbale Youth Group responded by launching community-based education on HIV prevention and family planning, reaching 20-50 young people per session. With Uganda’s high teenage pregnancy rates, the youth group partnered with the Ministry of Health and The Challenge Initiative, with support from Jhpiego, to provide combined health talks and services. This collaboration empowers adolescents to make informed reproductive health decisions.
