Does more surveillance lead to more safety? No. ➡ What’s happening? This month we have seen thousands come together against racism in the UK. The Government response to recent racist violence should address the root causes of racism in our society. Current proposals risk eroding our human rights in the name of restoring law and order. 🚨 Why is it concerning? The government proposes increasing use of live facial recognition (LFR) and further policing powers, risking human rights violations. These proposals risk discriminating against instead of protecting racialised communities. 🔽 What now? It is in protecting our rights, not diminishing them, that we can progress to an anti-racist society. If policymakers in the UK are serious about addressing the root causes of racism, they must act now. ⏩ What can we do? That means holding government to account to ensure they are protecting - not eroding - our fundamental rights. We're looking for an equity and inclusion practitioner to support us with our people policy review. Last year, we rolled out 43 refreshed people policies as part of our wider commitments to being a progressive and equitable employer. In the past 10 months, Israeli military airstrikes have struck schools, hospitals, aid trucks, and refugee camps in Gaza, turning places of learning and refuge into scenes of devastation. Sanctuaries for children have become battlegrounds, leaving nowhere safe. Three years ago today the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan. There has been a downward spiral of human rights violations. Women are banned from most aspects of life, abuses like torture and ill-treatment, arbitrary detentions, enforced disappearances, censorship continue with absolute impunity. Government stats released last week show the homelessness crisis cannot continue to be ignored. In the first three months of 2024, the number of children living in temporary housing rose to 151,630. That’s enough to fill 5054 classrooms. We need action. We need to recognise homelessness for what it is - a human rights issue. http://amn.st/6044lD0a2
