Under Governor Sakaja Johnson’s leadership, the Nairobi City County Government has declared that early childhood development will be a key priority for his term. Investments in early childhood development will reach all children in Nairobi aged 0-6 years old, with the primary aim of having all children ready to thrive once in school. This builds on the Governor’s commitment to prioritize the well-being of young children and families as a key pillar in making Nairobi a City of Hope, Dignity and Opportunity for All Children by 2030. To this end, the Nairobi County Cabinet has adopted a transformation action plan brought forward by Governor Sakaja and his team. Setting clear next steps for implementation and success, several key decisions were taken: - An Early Childhood Development Steering Committee has been formally established that will be chaired by Governor Sakaja. Other members include County Executive Committee Member (CECM) Mr. Charles KERICH, CECM Finance and Economic Planning; Ms. Rosemary Kariuki, CECM Talent Skills Development and Care; Ms. Suzanne Silantoi. L, CECM Health, Wellness and Nutrition; Mr. Ibrahim Nyangoya AUMA, CECM Green Nairobi; and Mr. Brian Mulama, CECM Mobility and Works. - To guide the County in planning high impact interventions in Nairobi, a baseline assessment is to be commissioned to assess where young children are currently missing their developmental milestones. - The County will identify locations to establish children’s playgrounds in each of the 85 wards in the city. - An envelope for budgeting early childhood initiatives has been included in the current budget, making funds available for the ongoing financial year. #Leadership #Cities #Kenya #EarlyChildhoodDevelopment

Under the leadership of His Excellency Dr. Hussein Mwinyi, President and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, early childhood development (ECD) has been elevated as a key priority to shape and secure Zanzibar’s future. This commitment is aligned with the Zanzibar Development Vision 2050, a transformative development plan aimed at fostering economic growth and elevating the living standards of the people of Zanzibar. The following strategic measures have been implemented to ensure that every child aged 0-5 years will reach their full development potential by 2030: 1. The President has established an Early Childhood Development Steering Committee that will coordinate ECD interventions across key sectors including Health, Education and Vocational Training, and Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children. The committee held its inaugural meeting on August 5th, 2024. 2. The Ministry of Health has committed 3,000 community health workers to ECD, focusing on parental coaching and providing training on other maternal and health issues. The introduction of ECD will be made to the pre-service training curriculum for these community workers. 3. A baseline assessment will be commissioned to understand the current developmental status of children in Zanzibar. 4. The President has committed to funding multi-sectoral ECD interventions through the treasury budget. The multi-sectoral approach will extend to support children from birth to age 8, ensuring a holistic and comprehensive strategy for early childhood development. #Leadership #Zanzibar #EarlyChildhoodDevelopment

The Ethiopian Government’s Seqota Declaration Program has achieved a significant milestone, averting stunting in nearly 100,000 children in 2022 alone. These impressive results were driven by the most dramatic drop in stunting rates ever recorded worldwide. Analysis carried out by Johns Hopkins University also projects that children brought into the program in 2021 will complete an additional 7,126 years of schooling and earn an additional $48 million over their lifetimes as a result of the government’s interventions. Mayor Adanech Abiebie convened her cabinet to consolidate transformative plans in six key areas that will markedly change Addis Ababa before the end of her term. Over the course of two days, the Mayor and 67 members of her cabinet aligned on her bold vision, setting clear targets for success. Mayor Adanech shared, “To build the new face of Addis Ababa…our leadership is commencing the transformative plan preparation for six strategically identified sectors: employment, revenue, housing, mobility, public service delivery, and land development and administration. We believe these will have an overarching effect on all other sectors.” Mayor Adanech is building on her successful transformation of early childhood development to make Addis Ababa the best African city to raise a child. This includes deploying 5,000 parental coaches, creating 12,000 playgrounds, transforming 1,000 preschools, closing 120 streets for children to safely play on Sundays, and integrating early childhood development touchpoints in all health centers—efforts that are already transforming the lives of children in a holistic manner. #UrbanDevelopment #Ethiopia #Cities #Leadership
