Eliminating the poverty premium - the extra costs people on low incomes pay for essential products & services.
Über uns
Fair By Design's vision is a UK where poor and low income people pay a fair price for essential services. People in poverty pay more for a range of products including energy, through expensive tariffs; loans and credit cards, via higher interest roans; and insurance, because of costlier premiums for living in certain postcodes. This is known as the poverty premium. We collaborate with industry, government, and regulators to design out the poverty premium. Our Venture Fund provides capital to help grow innovative and scalable ventures developing products that help make markets fairer. Ascension manages the Fair By Design Fund. Fair By Design's policy and advocacy work is run by the Barrow Cadbury Trust on behalf of a group of foundations.

Our new research shows low-income drivers can pay up to 48% more for car insurance. Key findings 🧵🧵🧵 1️⃣ People living in the most deprived areas can pay up to £314 more a year for car insurance compared to those in wealthier areas. 2️⃣ Paying monthly for car insurance, rather than in one go, can cost people on low incomes as much as 40% extra (or £384). 3️⃣ People living in more ethnically diverse areas pay around 20% higher (or around £180) than those in less ethnically diverse areas. This is true even if we only look at quotes for areas that are broadly comparable when it comes to crime, collision and deprivation levels Recommendations Action is needed now to end the car insurance poverty premium. We care calling on the new Labour Government to follow through with its manifesto pledge to act on soaring car insurance costs. Full research: https://lnkd.in/eVqgxYpv

Today Fair4All Finance's new research shows 20.3 million people are now living in financially vulnerable circumstances across the UK, up by 16% from 17.5 million in 2022. Good to see them calling attention to the poverty premium, which is costing the country a staggering £2.8bn per year.
New research from Fair4All Finance, Trajectory and CACI reveals how nearly half of all UK adults are now living in financially vulnerable circumstances – an increase of around 3 million over the last year. This means that over 20 million people are now firmly in one of our 6 segments of financial vulnerability. These segments have been designed to support organisations to better understand, serve and design for customers in financially vulnerable circumstances, a market that has seen significant growth in the last year. Visit our Segmentation hub to learn more, and to download useful tools and resources. Learn more about this research, and access our tools and resources on our website: https://lnkd.in/e5Zf2Fyu

“We’re encouraged to look to the market to solve our needs, but what if the market doesn’t want you? What if the market tells you you’re too costly to serve… you’re excluded, and you pay more.” Our Director Martin Coppack speaking at the @Fair4AllFinance #ficonf24

If you’re in attendance come see us at the Fair4AllFinance conference ‘Building Financial Inclusion Together.’ Looking forward to chatting to attendees about how tackling the poverty premium must be a key part of financial inclusion. #ficonf24

Which? and a coalition of consumer groups and energy firms are urging Ofgem to ensure loyal customers are able to access the same energy deals as new customers. The Ban on Aquisition only Tariffs (BAT) was introduced by Ofgem in April 2022. It has played a vital role in delivering fairer outcomes for customers by ensuring loyal customers are able to get the best deals. It also ensures that millions of customers in debt, who may not be able to switch to a new firm for months or even years, are able to access a better deal with their current supplier. Removing the (BAT), as proposed from this October, risks exacerbating the loyalty penalty and unsustainable business practices. #ConsumerRights With Citizens Advice, End Fuel Poverty Coalition, Fair By Design, E.ON Octopus Energy, Rebel Energy UK and So Energy

We’re part of a coalition with Which? urging Ofgem not to lift the ban on acquisition-only energy tariffs. If Ofgem did lift the ban, it could lead to existing customers being excluded from the best deals and risk opening the door to loyalty penalties.
