Which? and a coalition of consumer groups and energy firms are urging Ofgem to ensure loyal customers are able to access the same energy deals as new customers. The Ban on Aquisition only Tariffs (BAT) was introduced by Ofgem in April 2022. It has played a vital role in delivering fairer outcomes for customers by ensuring loyal customers are able to get the best deals. It also ensures that millions of customers in debt, who may not be able to switch to a new firm for months or even years, are able to access a better deal with their current supplier. We're calling on the next Government to end the poverty premium. Here are some key policy proposals that could make it happen.

We’re part of a coalition with Which? urging Ofgem not to lift the ban on acquisition-only energy tariffs. If Ofgem did lift the ban, it could lead to existing customers being excluded from the best deals and risk opening the door to loyalty penalties.

It's a chance to hear from financial counsellors and community stakeholders about what's happening on the ground for consumers experiencing vulnerability.   Martin Coppack from the UK's Fair By Design delivered the keynote speech on reducing the poverty premium, where low-income households pay more for essential services. He spoke about working in partnership and bringing the voice of lived experience to inform decision making.   Susan Fraser OAM from Uniting spoke about why language matters and how to work with people in a way that recognises their strength and resilience.   Financial Counselling Australia co-CEOs Peter Gartlan and Dr Domenique Meyrick reflected on opportunities for the financial counselling sector, including partnerships and a new insights tool to help bring stories on the ground to decision makers.
