Über uns

Fire Safety Matters (FSM) is an independent publication aimed at the largest collection of fire safety-focused professionals in the UK. The title reaches more than 40,000 named individuals through traditional print as well as online and e-mail platforms. The magazine contains unrivalled coverage of news, prosecutions and the latest products, as well as carrying detailed features, comment and analysis from leading industry figures. Importantly, FSM also provides in-depth previews for all of the key industry events. In point of fact, FSM is the only publication that brings together a readership from across all fire risk management perils. Fire Safety Matters publishes an industry-focused Podcast on the magazine's website. We also send out a detailed eNews bulletin to an extensive database of subscribers every Tuesday. FSM is ABC-audited and, thanks to an arrangement with the Institute of Fire Safety Managers, our audience can gain CPD points by reading the magazine/website and viewing our Podcasts and webinars.

The Fire Industry Association (FIA) has revised its Guidance Note aimed at enhancing the safety and efficiency of handling pressurised container assemblies within fixed firefighting systems. This Guidance Note contains the latest in industry Best Practice thinking and is tailored to those practitioners responsible for the transportation, installation, maintenance and removal of these critical safety components. The FIA’s Guidance Note delivers a high-level overview of the essential safety practices for dealing with pressurised containers. Given the wide variety of product types and extinguishing agents now available on the market, the guidelines offer a general framework rather than exhaustive details. Recent reports have focused on the issue of ‘Stay Put’ guidance at Grenfell Tower, with London Fire Commissioner Andy Roe stating that residents were asked “to stay put for too long”. In a statement, the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) has urged that, while it’s “right that ‘Stay Put’ is reviewed for situations like Grenfell”, the fire “was a crime caused by deregulation and institutional failings at the highest level.” FBU general secretary Matt Wrack has noted that firefighters attending the scene of the Grenfell fire on 14 June 2017 “were forced to work under impossible conditions, lacking appropriate preparation, planning and training”. The Trade Union cites a number of examples of when its own warnings on building safety and evacuation preparation were “ignored”. Following the fire that took place on 26 August at Spectrum House, a block of flats in Dagenham, the dedicated Fire Safety Working Group that sits within the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) has called for the industry-wide adoption of enhanced fire safety standards. The London Fire Brigade sent 40 fire engines and 225 firefighters to the scene at Freshwater Road after being called at 2.44 am. Families and children were among circa 100 people evacuated from the burning building. The blaze lasted for more than eight hours and was brought under control by 11.00 am. Four individuals were treated at the scene by crew members from the London Ambulance Service, with two of them being rushed to hospital. With the built environment contributing a significant amount of the UK’s total carbon footprint, there’s no question that the construction sector needs to act in order to ensure buildings meet their sustainable development goals. However, terminology and language have changed and have started to form a new set of ‘accounting principles’ which, to the uninitiated, govern material selection and choices for a project, as Iain Cox observes. These carbon-focused ‘accounting principles’ will drive design choices, but the question is whether there’s a blind spot? If we consider the impact from damage or potentially catastrophic risks such as fire, are we accounting for them and, if so, where?
