This September the #GreatBritishBeachClean is back 🙌 The Great British Beach Clean is a 10-day event where hundreds of beach cleans take place across the UK and Channel Islands, with thousands of volunteers helping us clean up our coastline 🌊 We don't just clean, we record what we find and then use the data to influence real change to help our ocean – like campaigning for the carrier bag charges which have led to an 80% drop in plastic bags being found on our beaches This year's event is taking place between 20-29 Sept and is kindly being sponsored by Cully & Sully Limited Come join us and let's clean up our beaches for a healthier planet 💙 Find out more and get involved here 👇 https://lnkd.in/dU7xUMEw

The Marine Conservation Society is the UK's leading marine charity working towards a cleaner, better protected and healthier ocean, for everyone 🌊 Today, our ocean is in poor health because of human activity. We’re determined to change this, working with communities, businesses and governments. For more than 30 years, we’ve been the voice of the sea, defending our coastal habitats and species. For a cleaner ocean, we find ways to prevent and clean up marine litter and pollution. And we use science to track the health of our waters. For a better-protected ocean, we secure spaces where species and habitats can recover. Only a sea full of life can absorb carbon and tackle climate change. For a healthier ocean, we promote sustainable fishing and aquaculture to minimise harm caused by harvesting and farming resources. And we educate the public so consumers can make better seafood-buying choices. Together, we can achieve our vision of seas full of life, where nature flourishes and people thrive.

Gold was my goal and I got there (😱), but an even harder and more pressing challenge we face globally is to save our oceans and protect them for future generations. As an Ocean Ambassador for the Marine Conservation Society I shared my thoughts on this topic, how we can protect marine life and some insight into my art which continues to raise funds for MCS UK and their important work. For those who have known me a long time, sharks and seas have been my passion since I was a child and before I even became involved in Paralympic swimming. I joined the Shark Trust as a kid with my pocket money and have always found my happiest and most peaceful moments in the big blue. Scuba, snorkelling, surfing, swimming, free diving, you name it - I have tried it. I share some insights into the Indonesian coral regrowth project I visited on a dive in Bali last year and my shock at mass tourism and its detrimental impacts on nature - without the correct education for tourists. We are at a tipping point globally with ocean temperature rises and the science backs this for those in doubt. Please find a link to the article in Your Ocean magazine below and do consider supporting MCS with their important work: https://lnkd.in/eDVBErue Marine Conservation Society Sport Positive

BREAKING NEWS: The average number of carrier bags found on UK beaches has fallen by 80% since charges were introduced in 2014! We've been monitoring beach litter for 30 years and the data gathered by our fantastic beach clean volunteers led to charges on single-use carrier bags. Last year, our volunteers found an average of 1 carrier bag every 100m of coastline surveyed compared to 5 every 100m in 2014 A huge thank you to our #Beachwatch volunteers who have gathered so much vital data - this is a big campaign win for our ocean! From keeping marine ecosystems healthy and preventing coastal erosion to providing shelter and transport for ocean creatures, sea turtles play a vital role in keeping our ocean thriving. 🌍 Our turtle conservation work in the Caribbean UK Overseas Territories has inspired our shop's new Caribbean Summer Collection. We’ve soaked up the vibrant colours and beautiful scenery to sprinkle some sunshine on your wardrobe. All of the seven sea turtle species are in there too. Wear them and think of how we’re all connected, working in equilibrium to create a healthy environment that we can all enjoy. Turtles are a key part of that. https://lnkd.in/eTXEZiux
