QR_ had an incredible experience at the Farnborough International Airshow! 2024 provided a fantastic opportunity to engage with industry leaders, explore the latest innovations, and participate in insightful discussions. From aerospace advancements and sustainability initiatives, to diversity in the workforce and supply chain challenges, the airshow was a melting pot of ideas and collaborations. Here's our top four takeaways: ➡ Quantifying engineering efficiency is hard… but not impossible. And it's important in the current landscape of constrained engineering resource combined with material and complexity-driven cost. The industry needs more engineers, and better organisational retention of those it has, but to bridge the immediate gap smarter deployment of existing resource is a must, but only meaningfully possible with a measure of engineering efficiency. Ben Fletcher has detailed thoughts on this, and would love to discuss specific contexts. ➡ There's an appetite for aero to learn from auto when it comes to scaling manufacturing operations. We've all seen the reputational damage that can result from quality shortcomings when internal processes and external suppliers aren't properly aligned to a given production level, and as much as the regulatory frameworks differ, auto knows volume and there are transferable lessons and approaches. William Smith knows the auto side of this inside out and is well positioned to advise on practical steps to identify the most applicable lessons, while Sam Hirst has been the design-to-line journey partner for a number of start-ups needing to nail it first time. ➡ Supply chain considerations still keep people up at night. More localised sourcing was a recurring theme, as was lack of real-time whole supply chain visibility for those operating in complex consortium environments. UK Director Paul Crabtree and Claire Gibson, prior to becoming QR_'s ADS Practice Lead, were involved in many of these projects and have seen their impact on both production flow and scrappage rates.   ➡ Data underpins everything, but becoming data-driven for organisations with the size and complexity typical of the sector remains a challenge. The appetite for large top-down transformation schemes has diminished, with a renewed focus on better use of existing data to drive decision-making. This often comes down to visibility and reporting rather than a lack of raw information, and significant improvements can be realised within a matter of months. However, this only works at a whole-programme level if the approach is used to systematically eliminate each bottleneck, not simply tackle the worse and in turn make something else the limiting factor. Marcus Youden would be delighted to chat through context-specific issues around this. Always an insightful and engaging experience at the Farnborough International Airshow! We'd love to hear your thoughts on these key takeaways and how they resonate with your experiences.

In addition to the MOVE event last week, we also had the privilege of attending the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) Automotive Summit on Tuesday, where industry leaders gathered to discuss the roadmap towards the 2035 vision. Here are Marcus Youden's top five takeaways from the event: ➡ EV Adoption: In Mike Hawes’ keynote speech, he emphasized the need for growth and the re-launch of the SMMT manifesto. The push for zero-emission mobility highlights the need for comprehensive incentives and infrastructural support to boost EV adoption. Hawes stressed that achieving widespread EV adoption not only requires technical solutions but also a shift in consumer mindset, which can be fostered through strategic incentives and reassuring policies that reduce perceived risks and enhance accessibility. ➡ Green Skills and Industrial Strategy: With a call for 100,000 more skilled workers by 2030, the focus on green skills and a robust industrial strategy is more crucial than ever. Integrating all aspects into a cohesive plan ensures we move without shifting goalposts towards a greener future. ➡ Decarbonization and Electrification: Michael Leiters, McLaren Automotive Ltd CEO shared insights on managing the huge transformation towards decarbonization. Emphasizing a gradual transition to hybrid and EV models, the approach includes heavy investment across the value chain to nurture innovation. ➡ Challenges in Commercial Vehicles and ESG: Large vans and heavy goods vehicles are facing unique challenges including high entry prices and insufficient infrastructure, which hinder the transition to cleaner fuels like hydrogen and electricity. This is driving a need for customer incentives and sustainable total cost of ownership (TCO) solutions through legislation and government support. ➡ Progress Towards Net Zero: The summit addressed the necessity to increase public charging infrastructure and ensure the affordability of charging, alongside ensuring energy comes from renewable sources. The summit was a profound reminder of our shared responsibilities and opportunities as we steer towards a sustainable automotive future. Let’s continue the conversation and work together to drive change! #SMMT2024 #AutomotiveInnovation #Sustainability #FutureMobility #ElectricVehicles

Last week, the MOVE: Mobility Re-imagined 2024 event brought together industry leaders to discuss the future of mobility, and the insights were as electrifying as the innovations on display! ➡ Driving EV Adoption: An engaging panel led by Roger Atkins highlighted the need for robust infrastructure and innovative solutions to build confidence in EV adoption. Companies like NIO are leading the way with initiatives like battery leasing and swap stations, demonstrating the practical steps being taken towards sustainable mobility. Additionally, innovative approaches such as using excess wind farm energy for free vehicle charging underscore efforts to balance our energy grid. ➡ SDV and Agile Practices: Automotive engineers are grappling with high complexity, prompting a move away from the traditional, hardware-defined models. The industry is instead embracing a tier-based, OEM-driven collaboration model, with a push towards vertical integration to enhance flexibility and reduce costs. The transition to software-defined vehicles (SDV) requires a robust digital lifecycle management approach, ensuring that issues are identified and addressed earlier in the development process, ultimately speeding up innovation and efficiency. ➡ Commercial Vehicles and Decarbonization: Discussions emphasized the importance of making decarbonization a higher priority through improved infrastructure readiness and affordability. Changes in fleet operations, such as the shift from return-to-home to return-to-depot models, call for intelligent data management to optimize productivity and efficiency. Heavy goods vehicles are now also joining the decarbonization mission - lots of opportunity in this space. ➡ Embracing Transformation: The event spotlighted the necessity for a global workforce and support for early adopters in the industry. Recognizing the value of CO2 + CO2e reduction and leveraging international expertise are critical for sustainable progress. ➡ Autonomous Vehicles on the Horizon: The future of autonomous vehicles looks promising with investments flowing and new models emerging, like Volvo Group's autonomous truck and Baidu, Inc.'s Robotaxi. The transition from ADAS to full autonomy is a complex journey where Product Data Management plays a supportive role in ensuring data accuracy and reliability. This event was a reminder of the exciting path ahead in mobility. Let's keep pushing the limits of innovation and sustainability! #MOVE2024 #FutureOfMobility #ElectricVehicles #AutonomousVehicles #Sustainability #Innovation
