Matt Franklin currently anchors ABC12 News at Five, Six and Eleven.
Matt Franklin is an Emmy award winning journalist and anchor of ABC12 news at 5pm, 6pm, and 11pm. He brings decades of news experience to viewers across mid-Michigan.
Matt joined the ABC12 news team in June of 2004 as a general assignment reporter in the Saginaw bureau before moving to Flint, where he anchored the weekend morning news and First at Four.
While at ABC12, Matt has reported on the changing times in Mid-Michigan. With an emphasis on the auto industry and fair labor practices, he has covered in-depth the bankruptcies and turnarounds of Delphi Automotive and General Motors, and their impact on union workers and families in Mid-Michigan. Matt has had many special moments in his career but one of the highlights was a one-on-one with Vice President Joe Biden in 2011.
Matt has covered the newest vehicle reveals and latest auto trends during the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. In addition to his anchoring duties, you’ll find Matt hosting a variety of events on ABC12, such as Back to the Bricks, the Frankenmuth Auto Fest, the Bay City Fireworks Festival and Flint’s very own Holiday Pops.
In 2021, Matt won an Emmy award for his work on the ABC 12 special, “The Path Forward.” The program examined issues on race, diversity, and calls for reform following civil unrest in 2020.
He was also named Best Anchor by the Michigan Associated Press in 2019, and has received numerous awards from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters.
Matt graduated from Central Michigan University with a degree in Broadcast and Cinematic Arts. In 2014, he was inducted into the inaugural “10 Under 10 Class” at CMU, where he was recognized for his career and dedication to the community. He feels that much of his success is attributed to the CMU community. Which is why he is proud to be a member of the Central Michigan University Alumni Association Board of Directors.
He is also on the board of directors for the Whaley Children’s Center. The non-profit provides services and housing to abused, neglected and at-risk foster children.
Originally from Detroit, Matt now calls Genesee County home.
