Mott Community College and e-learning company Med Certs have teamed up to bring mid Michigan students a state - of- the - art advanced medical training program.

FLINT, Mich. (WJRT) - Medical workers in the state are in high demand.

The Michigan Healthcare Workforce Index says nearly all the state's health occupations are projecting workforce shortages between now and 2032, especially allied health careers.

At most hospitals and medical facilities, doctors, nurses and front desk staff need support from allied health professionals.

"Allied health position are direct care patient positions," said Mott Community College Director of Workforce and Economic Development Autumn L. Scherzer.

They include careers in medical assisting, EKG technology and scribing. It's these types of jobs that are in need of filling.

"We have an aging workforce. There's high turnover and there's just competition," said Scherzer.

That's why Mott Community College and e-learning company MedCerts have teamed up to bring Mid-Michigan students a state-of-the-art medical training program.

"All of the classwork is online. It's a virtual class and then at the end that's when students go on-site with our employer partners. We have over 30 and they do their clinicals and an externship on-site," said Scherzer.

MedCerts teaches students through computer simulations, artificial intelligence, augmented reality and gamification. Students even get virtual feedback and correction.

Mott Community College is offering medial scribing and EKG tech programs that are completed at students' pace with certification in eight to 15 weeks. That gets them into a job much faster.

Scherzer said that most students in these types of programs land jobs before even completing the programs due to the career placement and externships.

"We love being diverse and having many opportunities to choose from," said Scherzer. "We're also personalizing an individuals career pathway so that they're successful."

Mott Community College is only one of 40 colleges in the country offering MedCerts certifications. The programs currently have open enrollment for students to apply at any time.

There are many ways students can fund their education like the Michigan Reconnect Program or Short-Term Reconnect program.
