Saginaw Township schools get $1.9 million to reopen community pool

The state budget includes an earmark of $1.9 million to repair the pool at Sherwood Elementary School.

Saginaw Township Community Schools announced that they are expecting to receive nearly $2 million from the state to repair a community pool.

SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJRT) - A community pool at Sherwood Elementary School in Saginaw Township could reopen soon thanks to a $1.9 million grant from the state budget.

The 35-year-old pool hosted community aquatics programs that served hundreds of residents every year in programs ranging from children's swimming lessons to older adult aquatics exercise.

Saginaw Township Community Schools closed the Sherwood Pool more than two years ago in February 2022 due to structural problems and a broken dehumidification system, which is beyond repair.

It was the only warm water pool with a water temperature above 86 degrees in the Saginaw area.

The school district met with building experts to discuss repair options for the pool and the structure surrounding it. They developed an estimated $1.9 million plan to fix the building and the pool.

School officials say they cannot use general fund money for the repairs because the pool is not used for day-to-day K-12 instructional programs. So they approached State Rep. Amos O'Neal of Saginaw for assistance.

He obtained an earmark in the 2025 state budget for the $1.9 million project. The funding will become official when Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signs the state budget into law later this summer and transfers to money this fall.

School officials hope to release a schedule for reopening the pool this fall after they receive the money.
