New York online casino updates
New York legalized off-track betting in 1970, then approved video lottery terminal gambling at racetracks in 2001 before racinos started to officially launch in 2004. Brick-and-mortar casinos were legalized in 2013, and sports betting became available — both in person and online — in 2022.
Online casino gambling is yet to follow suit, but Senator Joseph Addabbo, a longtime supporter of gambling expansion in New York, tabled his latest bid to launch legal online casinos statewide — Senate Bill S8185 — in January 2024.
In the meantime, New Yorkers can enjoy NY sweepstake casino sites and social casinos legally and safely, thanks to the unique virtual-currency gaming model.
Below are some key dates in New York's journey toward legal online casino gambling:
July 1, 2024: The legislation of iGaming in New York could be delayed further following a request from the Gaming Facility Location Board to push back the deadline for licence application requests until December 2025.
June 13, 2024: New York legislators vote in favor of strict deadlines on selecting three retail casinos to be built in downstate New York.
May 29, 2024: Senator Jessica Ramos opposes New York Mets owner Steve Cohen's bid to turn city-owned parking lot into casino and entertainment complex.
May 22, 2024: The state's regulated sportsbooks recorded an all-time high $70.9 million of weekly gross revenue, breaking the previous mark of $67.2 million set in January. The sports betting increase comes as the New York Knicks and New York Rangers are in the playoffs - and as iCasino legislation continues to stall.
May 8, 2024: Online casino gaming does not harm existing brick-and-mortar casino revenues, according to a panel of gaming stakeholders at the SBC Conference.
May 7, 2024: Sen. Addabbo files a bill calling for online poker to be legalised in New York, although the legislation isn't attached to online casinos or any other form of gaming.
May 3, 2024: Las Vegas Sands is the latest US gaming operator to publicly criticize New York's brick-and-mortar casino licensing process, per the New York Post. The prolonged rollout has in part delayed iGaming legalization, online casino supporters have said.
Apr. 17, 2024: New Yorkers will have access to the National Voluntary Self-Exclusion Program as early as summer of 2024, providing another problem gambling resource.
Apr. 10, 2024: One more potential Northeastern iGaming legalization candidate is positioned to see its hopes thwarted after the Maine House of Representatives rejected a bill. Rhode Island and Connecticut are two of seven states with legal iCasinos.
Mar. 16, 2024: The odds are growing longer for any U.S. state to pass a new iGaming bill in 2024, although Maryland is most likely to sanction online casinos next after HB 1319 moved passed the House and on to the Senate.
Mar. 7, 2024: iGaming legalization efforts in New York are in a "holding pattern" and may need help from the governor to proceed, according to Sen. Addabbo.
Mar. 6, 2024: Rush Street Interactive (RSI) CEO Richard Schwartz identifies New York, in addition to Illinois, Maryland, and Alberta in Canada, as one of the regions the company is monitoring closely for the future. Speaking in his opening statement on RSI's Q4 2023 earnings call, he said: "As we look ahead, these [markets] have us very excited about the future.”
Mar. 1, 2024: The New York Lottery ranks as North America's most profitable, providing $3.7 billion in state education funds over 2022/23.
Feb. 20, 2024: Over 700 casino workers sign an open letter protesting against online gambling in New York, citing fears that legalized online casinos could jeopardise their livelihoods.
Feb. 16, 2024: A new report, commissioned by Eilers & Krejcik Gaming (EKG), confirms iGaming boosts revenue for brick-and-mortar casinos.
Jan. 16, 2024: Governor Kathy Hochul omits iGaming from her 2024 executive budget, dampening the prospect of New York online casinos.
Jan. 12, 2024: Senate Bill S8185 is referred to the New York Senate racing, gaming and wagering committee.
Jan. 11, 2024: Sen. Addabbo tables Senate Bill S8185 in an attempt to launch a legal online casino market in New York. Read the full story here.
Jan. 5, 2024: Sen. Addabbo doubles down on Senate Bill S4856, which would authorize up to 21 casino operators.

Aug. 11, 2023: WynnBET closes its online casino offering in New Jersey and West Virginia, reducing the likelihood of a New York launch when the Empire State goes live.
June 26, 2023: The New York City theatrical scene remains outspoken in its disapproval of the Times Square casino project, which involves a collaboration between Jay-Z and Caesars.
March 15, 2023: iGaming legislation failed to make the annual budget, meaning any legalization is pushed back until at least 2024.
Jan. 3, 2023: The New York Gaming Facility Location Board opens up the casino application process to bring three full-fledged casinos to NY.
Feb. 24, 2022: A month after sports betting is legalized, Senator Joseph Addabbo introduces Senate Bill 8412. The bill would authorize iGaming and online casino play in NY if it passes.

November 2013: NY legalizes land-based casino gambling.
October 2001: Video lottery terminals are given the green light at numerous NY racetracks.
What are New York sweepstakes online casinos?
Sweepstakes casinos have many of the same attributes as traditional online gambling sites, but do not involve real money wagering. Players use Gold Coins (GC), a virtual currency which holds no monetary value, to play slots and other casino games. GC is often obtained through unique bonuses or promotions but can also be purchased from the platform's store.
Meanwhile, players can acquire Sweepstakes Coins (SC) via online promotions or social media contests. Free SC are often also included as extra bonuses when players purchase a GC package. Once you have accumulated enough SC, these can be redeemed for different prizes, including vouchers, gifts, or even real cash.
Covers Tip: Do not mistake sweepstakes casinos for social casinos. Both gaming platforms work on comparable principles and offer similar games, but you cannot redeem real money prizes at a social casino.

How to start playing NY online casino games
Getting started at an online casino is straightforward, regardless of whether you are signing up for a real money casino or a sweepstakes casino. New York online gamblers can follow the steps below to get in on the action online:
Select an online casino
Research the best New York online casinos and settle on your chosen sweepstakes casino site or social casino. You can always create multiple online casino accounts to find the platforms that best suit your playing style.
Register online
New Yorkers are able to register online from anywhere in the Empire State. Signing up for an online casino account takes only a few minutes, and having your personal information at the ready will only speed up this process. Expect to share your name and address and confirm your identity and location.
Claim a bonus
Most sweepstakes casinos offer welcome bonuses to new players, though a sweeps offer won't be as lucrative as a traditional online casino bonus. New-player offers include Gold Coins and bonus Sweeps Coins.
Boost your bankroll
Sweepstakes casinos allow players to purchase Gold Coins which can then be used to wager on games. Sweeps Coins, which can be exchanged for cash prizes, are often included as a free bonus when Gold Coins are purchased. Navigate to the coin purchase page, choose which package you would like, and submit the relevant banking details. Popular sweepstakes payment methods in New York include credit cards, debit cards, e-wallets like PayPal, and online banking, and it is likely these will all be available if real money online gambling launches.
Choose a casino game
Browse through the library of games on the site or casino app and choose from a selection of classic table games and slots. Read over the house rules if you’re playing a game for the first time, and make sure you are playing titles that contribute to any wagering requirements your welcome bonus stipulated.
Start playing
Once you’ve chosen your casino game, decide how much to wager and get playing. Consider setting time and money limits, have fun, and stay safe.
Withdraw funds
If you win enough Sweeps Coins while playing at a sweepstakes casino, you can exchange these for cash or other prizes. Once available in New York, real money online casinos will require you to confirm your payment details before you can withdraw any winnings. Bear in mind that there might also be some wagering requirements if you are trying to withdraw bonus winnings.
Why choose NY online casinos over land-based casinos?
While a night at the casino is undoubtedly great fun, there are many advantages to iGaming. It’s convenient, safe, and a great way to unwind and spend your free time.
NY gamblers will benefit from a huge range of offers and promotions when playing online. As most sites are mobile-friendly, you'll soon be able to choose from massive variety of games anywhere in New York. Sweepstakes casino sites also have impressive game libraries, and are available to play now.

Responsible gambling in New York
The New York State Gambling Commission, established in 2012, regulates all aspects of gaming activity in the state. The commission ensures that all licensed casinos adhere to gambling laws and regulations and have the authority to investigate issues within the sector.
What’s more, the New York Council on Problem Gambling provides responsible gambling advice and support to individuals and families affected by gambling. Both entities are working to maintain the high standards of gambling in the state and will play a critical role as more land-based and online casinos emerge in the years to come.
Finally, the National Council on Problem Gambling is a national organization that can provide players with links to local support agencies.
