A vegetarian hot dog alternative disgusted members of X, formerly Twitter, as people warn they "wouldn't show up" to BBQs serving the food item.

Carrots instead of hot dogs may sounds like a horrific idea - and social media certainly thinks so. With a content creator offering up the controversial swap-out for vegetarians and vegans, users ridiculed the change of ingredient.

Sharing the video, one user wrote: "What would happen if I invited you over for a cookout and served you a carrot in a bun? Would you notice?"

Attaching a TikTok recipie for the controversial dish, members of the public did not take too kindly to the change.

Some say they wouldn't even show up to a barbecue offering the food item, while others were left confused by the question.

One user wrote: "No, because if I knew I had a friend who would do that I wouldn’t show up." Another suggested they were confused by the swap, writing: "Then I would feel bad because I would’ve realised that carrots are better than the ground up hog bones and human DNA that is hot dogs. So I’m really confused by your question to be honest."

A third user even suggested it was a "good way to get smacked" at a cookout. Although some were completely opposed to trying the meal, others claimed they would.

"it might even be alright, but I'd still be mildly irritated unless it was hella better than I expect it to be," one user wrote.

Less-than convinced social media users joked they would "call the police" if served this at a BBQ when expecting a regular hot dog. One wrote: "Not going to lie, if I ever go round to someone's house for tea and they make me a carrot in a roll, I will call the police immediately."

One user tried the hotdog swap-out and says it can be delicious if the ingredients are prepared correctly. They revealed: "During my vegan days, made a killer carrot dog, but simmered the carrots in highly seasoned liquid, then cooked over wood smoked grill. Once topped with goodies, no real difference.

"Eating real dogs now, but I’ve got some vegan skills. Most don’t season/cook properly. Focus on the flavors and textures if you’re doing vegan food. Most recipes are terrible. Break it down to basic components and it’s easy to replicate delicious and scrumptious food veganized.
