Garden enthusiasts often face the challenge of keeping adorable yet destructive foxes away from their beloved plants.

These small, red creatures may seem charming but are infamous for their havoc-wreaking habits, particularly when on the hunt for food.

The RSPCA says many gardeners love to see a fox approaching, however others look to deter the four-legged critters. The animal charity suggests humane ways to remove the animals including removing food sources and shelter.

However, devotees of cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch have been sharing their wisdom on social media, touting a simple and inexpensive kitchen staple often used in cooking as an effective repellent.

Chilli powder

A distressed gardener recently sought advice on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook group, lamenting over persistent foxes that were uprooting her bulbs and using her yard as a lavatory.

Her plea was: "Hello, I have a tiny back yard/ garden, but constantly visited by foxes, they keep digging up all my bulbs and using it as a toilet. I live in a terrace with a back lane. Any tips on what I can do to stop them coming into the garden. Thank you."

The query quickly attracted a flurry of responses from the community, with many endorsing the use of chilli powder to send the scent-sensitive foxes packing, reports the Daily Record.

One individual recommended: "I used hot chilli powder.. just sprinkle it round. trust me they won't come back though you will have to renew it every so often."

Another suggested: "Chilli powder definitely works but needs repeatedly done for a little while."

Shield Pest Control confirms that the scent of chilli pepper is 'potent' enough to deter foxes. You can either scatter some directly in your garden or concoct a spicy repellent by boiling a chilli pepper with garlic cloves, blending the mix, and spraying it around your greenery.

For those without chilli powder in their pantry, Asda offers it starting at 85p. Alternatively, Tesco sells a small jar for £1, while Sainsbury's has it priced at £1.10.

The RSPCA suggests removing food sources, shelter and discouraging foxes from entering your garden. This can be achieved by using bins and composters with secure seals that foxes cannot penetrate, maintaining cleanliness and order, and installing fences or planting prickly vegetation.
