The King is said to be mulling over an attempted reconciliation with Prince Harry after "seeking advice" from several religious leaders.

The Duke of Sussex's relationship with his father went south after the release of his memoir Spare, the Oprah Winfrey interview and his and Meghan's Netflix documentary.

But King Charles is reported to "have faith" that his youngest "will return" to the royal fold, after a tumultuous period between them.

A source told the Daily Mail: "Charles misses his son. He still loves Harry and wants him back for personal reasons – regardless that he and Meghan do not [want to] return to royal life. Harry will always be Charles's much-loved son."

The source added: "He has faith that Harry could return. He misses the bond they once had, and the door will always remain open to him and his family. He does not want years of discord and disharmony clouding his reign."

Despite hopes of a thawing of relations between the King and Prince Harry, the 39-year-old relationship with his brother appears as damaged as ever.

GB News commentator Nigel Nelson told the channel: "That rift sounds like one that's going to be very difficult to mend," he said.

The journalist did however say that the King may be the key to overcoming the differences between his sons.

"If it is mendable, who would be in a better position to mend it than their father? So, if this was to actually happen, I mean, surely we'd all think it would be really great if Harry could come back and actually be part of that family again", he said.

Although he was quick to point out that Harry will have to play his part too.

"Harry also has to get his act together, so it works both ways," he said.
