Weather experts have revealed exactly when summer will turn "wet" after a month of possible heatwaves.

Nick Finnis, a senior forecaster at Netweather, has put together a long-range prediction for the summer. He is forecasting a heatwave followed by rain.

June, July and August are set to be warmer than the 1991-2020 long-term average, Finnis said, with increases of 1C to 1.5C.

This suggests “some heatwaves are possible”, with the greatest chances of these most likely in July, which is forecast to be the hottest month at 2C above average.

Rain is expected in August, according to Finnish, with slightly above-average rainfall forecast for the month.

The north is likely to be wetter than the south due to high pressure. August will still be warm, at 0.5C to 1C above average.

Finnis said: “In summary, for all three summer months, there is a unanimous signal from all models for above-average temperatures in most of the UK over June, July and August.

“The rainfall signal is more mixed and less clear, with generally no signal for wetter or drier, so on balance, average across all three months.”
