England booked their place in the Euro 2024 semi-finals after overcoming Switzerland on penalties in Dusseldorf. The Three Lions came from behind to force extra time as player of the match Bukayo Saka struck five minutes after Breel Embolo had opened the scoring in the 75th minute.
Extra time proved to be a stalemate, with neither team able to find a route to goal, before Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham, Saka and Ivan Tony all kept their nerve in the shootout.
Trent Alexander-Arnold then converted the decisive kick to set-up a last four showdown with either the Netherlands or Turkey on Wednesday.
England had flattered to deceive in their first four matches of the tournament and were far from their best against the Swiss.
But they had enough to clinch the result they were looking for and could go on to face France or Spain in the showpiece event next Sunday.
And discussing England’s quarter-final victory, Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate explained: “I thought the players were brilliant, it is the best we have played. To come from behind and [to have] shown [the] character and resilience we did, it isn't just about playing well.
“Huge performance, huge result and we are still in it. We had to be tactically spot on. We are in a third semi-final and it says a lot about the whole group. I thought we had good control.”

"It was so brave from Bukayo [Saka], he is one of our best and we were never in question he would take one. But we all knew what he went through [at Euro 2020].

England captain Harry Kane has paid tribute to his team-mates in the aftermath of the Three Lions' victory over Switzerland.
The striker told the BBC: “Another tough game and first of all great resilience from the lads to turn it up again. To get the goal, a fantastic finish from Bukayo Saka.
“Penalties are penalties, but I felt prepared - I was on the side, but I felt comfortable in the lads. Five out of five and a save from Picks (Jordan Pickford).
“We trust in whoever is on the pitch and the difference this year compared to past years is we have proven penalty takers – we have a lot more experience and we showed it out there.”
Wow, another England game at a major tournament will be decided by penalties. The Three Lions have only ever won two of nine shootouts at major tournaments. But they must hold their nerve tonight.

England have now been denied a free-kick on the edge of the box after Kieran Trippier’s cross was charged down by Remo Freuler and blocked by his hand. That would have been the ideal position for a set-piece.
Alan Shearer wants to see England players bursting to get on the end of Bukayo Saka's crosses.
The ex-England striker, who is on co-commentating duties on BBC One, just exclaimed: "Every time Bukayo Saka has had the ball he has gone past defenders and put the ball into the box.
"Again, a ball into the middle and he is looking for more movement - no white shirts getting onto the end of it."
Harry Kane has been denied a penalty after going down in the area following a challenge by Newcastle's Fabian Schar. He was appealing for it, but the referee wasn't interested.
