Happy Juneteenth! At AEC Unites, we are committed to driving change and creating a more inclusive industry. #Juneteenth is a moment to celebrate freedom and reflect on the progress we've made, but it's also a time to recognize the significant work still needed to dismantle systemic racism. In the architecture, engineering, and construction industries, Black professionals continue to face disparities: ✊🏿 Representation: Black professionals make up less than 3% of licensed architects in the United States. (NCARB). ✊🏿 Small Business Challenges: Black-owned construction businesses receive only a fraction of federal contracts, often less than 2% annually. (U.S. Census Bureau). ✊🏿 Talent Pipeline: The graduation rates for Black students in engineering programs remain lower than their peers, impacting the future workforce. (National Science Foundation). ✊🏿 Racial Wealth Gap: The White-Black wealth ratio narrowed modestly in 2022, as the Federal Reserve reported. Still, white families had vastly more wealth than Black families. In 2022, for every $100 the average white family held, the average Black family had $15.75 (Federal reserve). ✊🏿 Business Disparities: Black-owned businesses are often undercapitalized, with Black entrepreneurs receiving just 1% of venture capital funding.(Harvard Business Review). These statistics highlight the ongoing inequities that must be addressed. On this Juneteenth, let us engage in meaningful conversations, challenge societal norms, and advocate for lasting change. By educating ourselves, amplifying Black voices, and supporting initiatives that address these disparities, we can create a more equitable AEC industry and society for all. #Juneteenth #AECUnites #Equity #Inclusion #Diversity #BlackExcellence #Construction #Engineering #Architecture #BlackWealth #BusinessDisparities

I'm resharing this wonderful initiative just in case you missed it. In May, Secretary Raimondo announced the Million Women in Construction Community Pledge with an initial seven signatories pledging their support of the initiative and a commitment to supporting women in construction. Three of the seven signatories are AEC Unites members; McKissack & McKissack, Mortenson and Shawmut Design and Construction. The Million Women in Construction initiative is a nationwide call to action for the construction industry – construction contractors, trade unions, and training institutions – to commit to bold steps that will ensure a robust and diverse workforce in the years ahead. It will be necessary to recruit, train, hire, and retain thousands of new and non-traditional workers – the next generation of skilled laborers and leaders who are prepared to rebuild U.S. infrastructure and supply chains and complement Federal government investments.
