It goes without saying that summer in Southern California is hot. For AltaMed PACE Patient Catalina, the heat is even more worrying. She and her family are currently living in a garage without air conditioning. Heat brings many dangerous health conditions, especially for medically fragile populations like children and seniors. Neither Catalina nor her husband are currently working, making it difficult to purchase an air conditioner for their space—even the affordable one she saw online felt out of reach. Thanks to our generous donors, community partners, and Andrea, a Senior Care Advocate who nominated Catalina for a micro-grant from the Community Care Fund, we were able to gift Catalina with the funds needed to purchase the air conditioner. 🔗 Help more patients like Catalina stay safe and healthy. Congratulations, Dr. Angulo! This award is well-deserved—thank you for championing health equity and advocating for our patients in everything you do.
Congratulations to our very own Dr. Marco Angulo, Medical Director of Medical Education, on receiving the 2024 Health Equity Leadership Award from Physicians for a Healthy California! Self-expression and creativity through art are not only healing; they have the power to bring us together through our shared experiences. In 2023-2024, AltaMed held a series of art workshops in local cities across Los Angeles and Orange counties, inviting community members of all ages to explore their identity, cultural history, and environment through a variety of art mediums. Whether it's making music, decorating a journal, or painting a mural, art can express ideas, advocate for social change, and better the lives of people in our shared communities. A big thank you to the Latino Community Foundation and the California Arts Council for empowering our communities to share their stories through art.

We are so excited to welcome this year’s cohort of AltaMed Scholars! These first-generation college students will spend the next six weeks getting hands-on experience and learning directly from practicing AltaMed physicians as they make the journey to medical school. At orientation, these students heard from AltaMed Health Services leaders including AltaMed CAO and AltaMed Foundation President Zoila D. Escobar, Ed.D. and Medical Director of Medical Education Dr. Marco Angulo. We are proud to cultivate a diverse workforce and look forward to spending the summer with these scholars! #AltaMedScholars #ThisIsAltaMed

Imagine being 14 and worrying about your family having enough to eat. For Jason, this was a reality. His mother had been dealing with ongoing health issues that impacted their family’s income, leading to food insecurity. Worried about his family’s food supply, Jason started eating smaller portions at meal times to ensure there was enough food to go around. When Jason’s pediatrician, Dr. Norma Perez, heard about this, she was concerned; nobody should go hungry, but especially not a growing teenager. Dr. Perez nominated his family to receive a micro-grant from our Community Care Fund. Thank to the generosity of our employee and external donors, we were able to provide Jason's family with $300 for groceries and a few extra surprises to celebrate his upcoming graduation. 🎉 Jason's story shows how powerful our community can be when we come together. Let’s keep supporting each other and making a difference. Please consider helping students like Jason by making a donation that will support our upcoming employee volunteer backpack packing event at https://lnkd.in/gw8iEa8y

"One key thing that I will always take away from Escalera is that help is always there if you look for it. You’ll find it in programs like this one, different resources and people like your friends, family and program" - Ciara Cabrera, Escalera Graduate and future University of California, Berkeley Bear

AltaMed nurse Flor Medina-Trejo came to the United States at the age of 12 to pursue the American Dream. Although she knew she always wanted a career taking care of others, her immigration status meant she didn’t have access to the financial aid necessary to pursue college. At the age of 35, Flor started her journey into higher education and graduated as an LVN. She began her nursing journey at the AltaMed El Monte clinic, and in 2024, she joined the first cohort of students to graduate from the American Career College Associate Degree in Nursing program. 🔗 Read Flor’s full story on our website at https://lnkd.in/gKYDTeWP
