The Labor Department on Tuesday proposed a standard for U.S. employers to address excessive heat -- the first federal rule of its kind that, if finalized, would affect an estimated 36 million workers. Heat is the leading weather-related killer in the U.S., causing 2,300 deaths last year. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration's standard would apply to workers exposed to heat index readings of at least 80 degrees Fahrenheit. For years, public health and labor advocates have called for such standards for farmworkers, delivery and construction workers, landscapers and indoor workers in warehouses, factories and kitchens. On Tuesday, President Joe Biden said denying climate change is "not only outrageous, it’s really stupid." Industry groups and chambers of commerce alongside some Republicans have opposed workplace heat standards, saying they would be difficult to implement across a wide range of industries. Three years ago, Google set an ambitious plan to address #climatechange by going net zero by 2030. The company has one of the most significant climate commitments and has been seen as an industry leader. But a report from the company Tuesday shows it is nowhere near meeting that goal. Rather than declining, its #emissions grew 13% in 2023 over the year before. Compared to its baseline year of 2019, emissions have soared 48%. #artificialintelligence-driven #datacenters are at the heart of that metric and increased #energyconsumption. Other major tech company #sustainability plans are also challenged by the proliferation of data centers. Amanda D. Smith, senior scientist at the climate nonprofit Project Drawdown, said those who use #AI need to do so responsibly. “It’s up to us as humans to watch what we’re doing with it and to question why we’re doing that,” she said. “When it’s worth it, we can make sure that those demands are going to be met by clean sources of power.” More for The Associated Press below:

DETROIT (AP) — Tesla’s global sales fell for the second straight quarter despite price cuts and low-interest financing offers, another sign of weaking demand for the company’s products and electric vehicles overall. The Austin, Texas, company said Tuesday that it sold 436,956 vehicles from April through June, down 4.8% from 466,140 sold the same period a year ago. But the sales were better than the 436,000 that analysts had expected. Demand for EVs worldwide is slowing, but they’re still growing for most automakers. Tesla, with an aging model lineup and relatively high average selling prices, has struggled more than other manufacturers. Still it retained the title of the world’s top-selling electric vehicle maker.

Last week I told you about use eSIMs, which most new cellphones are using now. They are digital versions of those chips you've got put in your phone to get service. If you want to avoid mobile phone data roaming charges when you're traveling, then eSIMS are really useful. Now here's a video on eSIMs by that I hope you enjoy watching. Don't worry, it'll only take a minute of your time! https://lnkd.in/gxwpHXqZ
The Associated Press (AP) on Instagram: "For trips overseas, a smartphone is helpful. How else will you check Google Maps to find your Airbnb? If you’re using apps that use data while traveling, there’s a risk of racking up hefty roaming fees from your phone carrier. The solution? An eSIM for your smartphone."

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell on Tuesday welcomed recent good news on inflation, which he noted has resumed declining after persistently high readings to start the year. Still, he said more such reports would be needed for the Fed to start cutting its benchmark interest rate. Powell spoke as the Fed is navigating the tricky decision of when to reduce its benchmark rate. Too soon, and inflation could re-emerge, forcing the Fed to reverse course and push rates higher. Too late, and high rates could push the economy into recession. https://lnkd.in/ezT7rXuz
