Bellomy is a fully remote workplace, yet it was novel last week when an internal team meeting went mobile. Members of our Strategy and Client Services teams have a regular standing meeting to share updates, with the meeting leader rotating among attendees. When Amy Moses (Senior Director, Client Services) led the meeting last week, she encouraged her co-workers — wherever they were, and if they could — to join her for a walk. During the meeting, Amy spoke about work-life balance and the benefits of walking during a meeting. (Being a Bellomyte, Amy naturally leaned into research on the topic.) We found Amy’s thoughts on the subject interesting so we’re sharing them here. First, a declaration: Your work is important, and you are not getting paid to walk. Then some parameters: - Reserve walks for internal meetings only, and avoid walking during meetings that are heavy on visuals. - Consider staying off camera to limit distractions and because you can’t always control the environment. (Although because she was specifically encouraging walking, Amy stayed on camera while she presented.) - Pace yourself so that if you want to speak, you won’t be out of breath. And fair warning: There will be times when you’re walking and the call drops, or there are sirens in the background — these things happen. That said, if the conditions are right and the sun is shining, Amy says a “walking meeting” might be a great way to mix things up. You'll stay engaged Because you’ll be faced with fewer distractions (like responding to emails), walking during a meeting promotes engaged listening. You’ll stay energized Post-walk, Amy said she’s typically more productive and creative, and the science bears it out. Scientists at the University of Miami found that walking meetings led to an 8% increase in productivity. Research from Stanford showed that walking increased creativity by 60% compared to sitting. You’ll be healthier The federal Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommends adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity, aerobic, physical activity each week — you’d be a third of the way there after just one 50-minute meeting. That’s somewhere around 5,650 steps, or 80% of the recommended 7,000/day recommended to reduce the risk of premature death. On top of all this, you’ll have fun and enjoy the experience of combining work with a bit of exercise and fresh air, Amy said. What do you think about stepping out for standups? And if you want Amy’s practical tips to prepare for a walking meeting, let us know and we’ll share them here. #Bellomy #TheBellomyWay #walking #WorkFromHome

More than 400 students in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County started the school year Monday with the supplies they need at no charge to their families, thanks to widespread community support for an initiative led by Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. This is the third year the school system has supplied area students through contributions, and the event grows each year, said Terry Matthews, executive director of community engagement for WSFC schools. This is Bellomy’s second year contributing to the effort, with Bellomytes donating more than 30 backpacks plus notebooks, index cards, headphones, hand sanitizer, feminine hygiene products, erasers, scissors, glue, sticky notes and SO MANY pencils, said Carolyn Fisch, who is Bellomy’s HR director and coordinated our supply contributions. While Bellomy, founded in 1976 and based in Winston-Salem, transitioned to a remote-work model in 2020, we’ve continued our long, proud tradition of partnering with an area nonprofit each quarter. “Our Bellomy team members have hearts of gold and always give generously to this project, as well as our other efforts to give back to our communities!” Carolyn said. We'd love to hear how other remote workplaces stay connected and/or give back. Tell us about it in the comments. #Bellomy #TheBellomyWay #community #WorkFromHome

Bellomytes make it a habit to support efforts that strengthen the community. With back-to-school hot on our heels, we’re currently collecting assorted supplies to help outfit area students for academic success. Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools is coordinating the effort and has two events planned for early August where students can shop the donated supplies free of charge. Terry Matthews leads the effort for WSFCS and said more than 20 community partners participate. This is the third year for the school supply pop-up shops, she said, and a new grant means at least 300 students should benefit. #Bellomy #TheBellomyWay #community

A new case study on the E-Tabs site features Bellomy's own Carla Jordan, VP, Research Operations, weighing in on the benefits of automated reporting. Gen Z — born late 1990s to early 2010s — already makes up more than 10% of the U.S. workforce. As these younger digital natives reach working age, the number will rise to 30% by 2030, says the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. For organizations that want to connect with members of Gen Z, understanding their relationship with AI — including a growing preference for AI-driven guidance and growth — is critical to success. Here’s a look at what’s behind the shift and how organizations might adapt to build a responsive, engaged, future-ready workforce.
