California Coastal Horse Rescue (CCHR) cares for those horses that no one else will care for... Founded in 2000, the mission of CCHR, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, is to rescue abandoned, abused, neglected and slaughter-bound horses and to provide them with a second chance for healthy and productive lives. CCHR provides shelter, food, veterinary care, farrier services, rehabilitation, and adoption services for the horses in its care. It also offers long-term sanctuary to disabled and elderly horses. With a combination of specialized care and loving support, all horses rescued by CCHR are given the opportunity to heal, thrive and to lead happy and peaceful lives. Since its inception, CCHR has given sanctuary to over 150 horses and ponies at its facility and has also placed over 600 equines in new homes through its adoption services. CCHR relies on the generous support of donors, volunteers, sponsors, and grants. CCHR will always be an advocate for horses in need and will always strive to offer Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Refuge to these beautiful and treasured animals. • It’s official! The lovely MadiZen and her new mom and dad are now a forever family! This beautiful girl has been busy settling into her new home over the last few weeks. MadiZen‘s rescue by CCHR is also a story of how when people come together wonderful things can happen for horses in need. We heard about MadiZen through a friend of the rescue. She felt that MadiZen needed a new home where her full potential could shine through. From the moment we met this gorgeous girl, we knew she just needed a chance to spread her wings and be fully herself. Madi came through her rehabilitation at CCHR with flying colors and then we knew she was ready to meet her special person (or persons as ended up being the case!). She could not have found companions who love her more. She is home! Thank you to everyone who made MadiZen’s rescue journey possible! It absolutely takes a herd!

  • We enjoyed being a part of VCCF’s Animal Welfare Tour last week, where they visited animal welfare-focused nonprofits in the Ojai Valley. During the visit, VCCF toured the Rescue ranch and learned about our work rescuing, rehabilitating, rehoming, and providing refuge to abandoned, abused, neglected, and slaughter-bound equines for the past 24 years. After hearing about what we do, VCCF was able to see it in action — our Board Vice President and trainer, Alexis Vega, gave an equine rehabilitation demonstration with Jessica, an Arabian/Saddlebred mare, who is available for adoption. Thank you VCCF, it was a great day!

If you missed our live coverage of last week's VCCF Animal Welfare tour, take a look at these photos of the incredible animal welfare-focused nonprofits that our group got to visit! Be sure to keep an eye on our social media for our wrap-up blog post and even MORE photos of these amazing animals. Thanks again to Camp Arnaz and the Girl Scouts of California's Central Coast, Ojai Raptor Center, Humane Society of Ventura County, and California Coastal Horse Rescue for making this possible!

  • CCHR Alumni Spotlight | Jack & Remi: Abandoned in a field together, Jack and his buddy Remi were initially discovered by two good samaritans who contacted CCHR. The horses arrived to CCHR at the start of the New Year in 2021–both underweight and devoid of any muscle from lack of exercise—and their rehabilitation journey began. Jack, being an older, more experienced, and easy-going quarter horse, quickly found his new family, but Remi’s journey to his new family took a while longer. Remi, being younger, inexperienced, anxious, and strong-willed, underwent many months of rehabilitation and training, including spending some time with Heather Lomax at Hidden Creek Ranch where he dabbled in mounted archery! We were all so happy when he finally found his adoptive family, who happened to be experienced with his breed (Missouri Fox Trotter), and he was adopted one year after Jack. Today, both horses are extremely well cared for and loved by their respective adoptive families, and after spending more than two years apart at different stables, we are happy to report that the boys have been reunited! Jack and Remi are now boarded at the same facility, which happened by coincidence - Remi’s family had no idea they were moving him to Jack’s barn! Both horses (and their people) now enjoy weekly trail rides together. Truly, a happy CCHR success story!
