Non-profit wildlife rehabilitation center focusing on birds of prey. Offering a variety of wildlife education programs.

Über uns

Ojai Raptor Center is a fully functional and permitted rehabilitation center specializing in birds of prey. Every year, Ojai Raptor Center takes in roughly 1000 or more sick, injured or orphaned birds (including many non-raptor birds) with the hopes of rehabilitating them and releasing them back to the wild. Our four-acre campus includes a hospital and medical room, outdoor flight pens (with one of the largest in California), aviaries and mews. Beyond wildlife rehabilitation, our wildlife education programs advance our commitment to teaching the public about our local raptor species, and how human interaction affects them. Through wildlife education we hope to inspire people to learn more about birds of prey and how to protect them. We achieve wildlife education by providing educational programs with our raptor ambassadors — the non-releasable birds of prey who live at the center, and are trained to be ambassadors for their species. Many people will never get the chance to learn about birds of prey live and up close. We also take pride in teaching children. In order to reach more children, our educational programs are portable traveling to classrooms and other group settings. We hope that the next generation will have a love and respect for birds of prey, their important place in our ecosystem, and our shared environment. With our small staff and a large, committed network of volunteers, we have been doing this work since 2000. This important work is made possible through private funding sources in the form of donations and grants. We are a 501(c) nonprofit organization and do not receive sustained funding from government agencies; though we are permitted by both the California Department of Fish and Wildlife as well as the United States Fish and Wildlife Services.

Join us at the Stagecoach Inn Museum on Saturday, July 6th, 2024 for a raptor release and watch one of our rehabilitated patients soar to freedom! This is a Pop-Up Release event, so no registration is required. We are so grateful for our nonprofit and business partners who are committed to eradicating rodenticides and using raptors as effective natural rodent control that doesn't harm the earth or the creatures that share our world. The Stagecoach Inn Museum does not use rodenticides, and their resident Blacksmith even built a Barn Owl Nesting Box using the plans that we provide for free to encourage Barn Owls to stay around their property! If you ever get a chance, visit the Stagecoach Inn Museum, get a taste of history with a tour of the museum, visit the working Blacksmith Shop, and explore the beautiful grounds!

In wildlife rehabilitation, we normally focus solely on how such care benefits wildlife and our ecosystems. However, writer Margaret Renkl eloquently describes how wildlife rehabilitation can heal both the animals being cared for and the humans who, with their whole hearts invested, go above and beyond to care for and protect wildlife. "Rehabbers go to extraordinary lengths to save every injured animal. If they can’t save the animal, they can at least give it a merciful death. And they can take the opportunity to explain why it’s so important to walk the yard before mowing, giving wildlife of all kinds a chance to flee. Each animal in rescue represents a human being who has learned something important about living more gently in the world. Rehabilitating the human heart may be the most important work these organizations do." - Margaret Renkl https://lnkd.in/gn2atWWW

We are so grateful to the Ventura County Community Foundation for its leadership and commitment to animal welfare in Ventura County! Thank you to everyone who came out to visit our center and learn more about our work and the need in our community! We had a wonderful time sharing our passion for wildlife, especially raptors, with all of you!

If you missed our live coverage of last week's VCCF Animal Welfare tour, take a look at these photos of the incredible animal welfare-focused nonprofits that our group got to visit! Be sure to keep an eye on our social media for our wrap-up blog post and even MORE photos of these amazing animals. Thanks again to Camp Arnaz and the Girl Scouts of California's Central Coast, Ojai Raptor Center, Humane Society of Ventura County, and California Coastal Horse Rescue for making this possible!

While we care for hundreds of baby wildlife annually, just this past March, we have received an unusually high number of owlets for this time of year. Many of the baby Great Horned Owls and Barn Owls admitted to our center were found and rescued after the high winds swept across California, knocking them from their nests. As a result, many of these little ones are suffering from injuries and require specialized medical care. We encourage anyone who comes across a young wild animal to immediately contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator to assess the situation and help determine whether or not the baby needs to be rescued. If you are located in our area call our Wildlife Hotline at: 805-649-6884. If you are not local, use Animal Help Now to find your local rehabilitation agency (ahnow.org). And PLEASE consider donating to our center. It costs thousands of dollars to feed just one baby in our care, and that does not include the costs of providing medical care. You can donate here to help care for these vulnerable babies: https://lnkd.in/gJH-trF4 https://lnkd.in/gFwGpMjb

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” ― Fred Rogers We are so grateful for everyone who jumped into action and worked together to save this beautiful Barn Owl and get her to our center for rehabilitation. We joined many of the rescuers last Saturday at Stow House in Goleta to release this owl back into the wild, and it was an inspiring occasion. A big thank you to: Susie Clothier, photographer, and Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network (SBWCN) volunteer, Dyllan Helenberger from SBWCN, Firefighters from Santa Barbara County Fire Station No. 14, Goleta Public Works, and all of the paramedics, animal rescuers, and so many others who dropped everything to help this vulnerable owl gain a second chance at life. Read more about this rescue and the subsequent release. https://lnkd.in/grHeRCNP

Education is an important part of our mission, and we are excited to be a part of the Pax Environmental Science Institute (PESI) again this year! PESI is a FREE 8-week program for local high school students interested in learning about various environmental disciplines from local professionals. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to explore possible career and educational pathways beyond those typically presented as a part of high school career guidance. Students spend each day with a different professional or organization working in various fields related to environmental conservation. On March 30th, the group will visit the Ojai Raptor Center to learn about both wings of our organization: wildlife rehabilitation as well as environmental education, which includes avian training and environmental stewardship. Registration is now open and space is limited!
