We're pumped to welcome community liaison, Olivia Washington, to the Minnetonka Police Department team through the Joint Community Police Partnership (JCPP). JCPP is a Hennepin County program that works to enhance communication and understanding between diverse communities and law enforcement by embedding liaisons in police departments throughout the county. While employed by Hennepin County, Washington works full-time with the Minnetonka department to engage the community in two-way communication. Relying on her background in community engagement and marketing, Washington hopes to build trust and dialogue between the department and Minnetonka’s diverse communities. “It’s a really great opportunity to humanize police officers and make them relatable to the general public because there is a stigma around police officers–especially in certain communities–being someone that you should be fearful of,” Washington says. In her first couple months, Washington has focused on getting to know Minnetonka officers and community leaders, participating in events like Night to Unite. This fall, she is organizing the department’s first Multicultural Advisory Committee. The committee will include Minnetonka residents and community organizers who will meet monthly with police personnel to discuss topics important to members’ communities and the department to strengthen police-community relations. “[The Minnetonka] community is very engaged, and they want to be part of the changes that are happening,” Washington says. “They want a say; they want to make sure their voices are being heard.” Be sure to say hello to Washington as she’s out and about connecting with the Minnetonka community. “I’m truly excited to dive deeper into the Minnetonka community and connect with its residents. This role gives me a wonderful opportunity to listen, learn and build strong, trusting relationships that reflect the diverse voices and needs of our community.”

Last week, over 40 members graduated from the program! It was a great day of celebrating everyone's hard work and service to their communities over the past 11 months. Members shared about their projects via a poster session, we heard from keynote speaker Patrick Hamilton about the sustainability initiatives at the Science Museum of Minnesota, and members Maggie (Olmsted County Minnesota) and Eddy (Cedar Creek Science Reserve), supervisor Rebecca (Great Plains Institute) and alumni Shane (City of Maple Grove, Minnesota) shared testimonials. It was a wonderful celebration! Congratulations to our new graduating group of MN GreenCorps members! #MNGreenCorps #AmeriCorps

On March 26, Minnetonka Police Officer Eliana Welbes demonstrated exceptional conduct and competence in negotiating with a barricaded suspect, defusing a tense situation and earning her the dapartment's Commendation with Distinction Award. Welbes, who joined the department in January 2024, was with her field training officer on March 26 when they assisted officers from the South Lake Minnetonka Police Department after a vehicle pursuit in which the driver had pointed a firearm at officers. Following the pursuit, the suspect barricaded herself inside her crashed vehicle and refused to surrender to law enforcement. Welbes assumed the role of the primary negotiator. For three hours, Welbes demonstrated remarkable patience and skill in communicating with the suspect, who was grappling with mental health issues and the beginning stages of hypothermia. “Your empathetic approach allowed you to de-escalate the situation, and you ultimately persuaded the suspect to surrender peacefully,” Boerboom wrote in her commendation letter. “Your actions undoubtedly played a pivotal role in ensuring the safety of all involved.” Commendation with Distinction is awarded to a member of the department who has clearly shown an extraordinary level of expertise, thoroughness, conscientiousness or determination during an incident. Congratulations, Officer Welbes, and thank you for your exceptional service to our community.
