🌲 Most reforestation programs across LMICs focus solely on tree planting. However, a new study has uncovered that nearly half of all suitable reforestation sites would be more effective in carbon sequestration if forests were allowed to regrow naturally. Learn more. ⤵️

Since 1987, Conservation International has worked to spotlight and secure the critical benefits that nature provides to humanity. Combining fieldwork with innovations in science, policy and finance, we’ve helped protect more than 6 million square kilometers (2.3 million square miles) of land and sea across more than 70 countries. Today, with offices in more than two dozen countries and a worldwide network of thousands of partners, our reach is truly global. But we couldn't have made it this far without you. Your contributions support our work to protect nature for the benefit of us all.

When you’re hungry and far from home, you might find yourself being less picky about what you eat. Not so for birds. The further they are from the core of their habitats, the pickier they get, according to a first-of-its-kind study from Conservation International, the University of Canterbury, Sao Paulo State University- The Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) and others that investigated the feeding behavior of nearly 100 bird species across six continents. Turns out, birds’ feeding preferences are highly connected to environmental stressors — and changes in their behavior could have major impacts on forests and other critical ecosystems that rely on birds to disperse seeds, said Conservation International climate expert Camila Donatti, a study co-author.

Ecuador is taking bold steps to protect its mangroves — natural climate champions, which act as buffers against rising seas and extreme weather. The new “Mangroves for Climate” project, funded the Green Climate Fund, will reduce flood risks for nearly 200,000 people and support sustainable economic growth. This is a huge win for both the environment and local communities. #MangroveDay https://lnkd.in/ejA3tXgT

Planting trees — the right kind, in the right place, in the right way — is far better for fighting climate change than previously thought, according to a new first-of-its-kind study led by former Conservation International fellow Jonah Busch. And in many cases, the study finds, this potential remains untapped.
