With an array of economic development programs and beautification services to go with its "feet on the street" enhanced public safety system, the Downtown Development District has been a key player in moving Downtown New Orleans forward.. The DDD was created by the Louisiana Legislature in 1974 as the nation's first assessment-based business improvement district. Funding comes from a property assessment in the Downtown area, which is further leveraged with state and federal dollars, sponsorships and fund-raising activities. The DDD is governed by an 11-member board of commissioners that guides its policies and programs. The future holds great promise for Downtown, and the DDD is here to help developers build their Downtown investments - from the ground up! The DDD drives the development of Downtown New Orleans and is a catalyst for a prosperous, stimulating and innovative heart of the Crescent City.

Each year, Downtown Development District honors a member of its hardworking Clean Team with one of our prestigious Downtown NOLA Awards. We are immensely proud to present this award, for the second year in a row, to Clean Team Ambassador Walter Abney. Walter Abney has been helping to elevate the Clean Team effort in Downtown since May of 2022. After relocating to New Orleans from Lake Charles in the wake of Hurricane Laura, Walter developed a deep love for the city and its Downtown area. His passion for keeping the neighborhood clean and spending time outdoors shines through in his deep-rooted dedication to his work; he can often be found moving quickly through the streets of Downtown with tools in hand, covering as much ground as he possibly can within the course of the day. A committed community member and an always-friendly face, Walter epitomizes the mission of DDD, and does it with care, compassion, and inspiration that is both admirable and infectious. We invite you to join DDD in celebrating Walter and his fellow 2024 Downtown NOLA Award Honorees on September 26th at Generations Hall. Downtown Development District is honored to present its 2024 Public Safety Officer of the Year Award to Officer Ana Esparza. As a dedicated member of the DDD Private Patrol Unit, Ana works diligently to keep Downtown New Orleans safe—demonstrating strength, kindness, and capability from her Canal Street patrol region. She approaches each day as an opportunity to impact and uplift the District, treating all residents, workers, and visitors with empathy, patience, and respect. Her presence in the neighborhood makes it a better place, and her resilience mirrors the community surrounding her. During her time in the DDD, Ana loves to frequent Nostalgia NOLA for coffee or stop by Zesty Creole on Canal Street for traditional New Orleans dishes. She also loves Downtown's delicious breakfast offerings, often visiting the popular Two Chicks Cafe for their grits. DDD applauds Ana for her hard work and eagerly looks forward to recognizing her efforts at the Downtown NOLA Awards on Thursday, September 26th at Generations Hall.
