Our STEM Fellows recently had the opportunity to visit the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA) and dive deep into the STEM behind public transportation. During this immersive experience, students engaged with experts who maintain the historic streetcars, learning about the intricate mechanics and rich history that keep the “wheels rolling.” They explored essential aspects of public transportation systems, including engineering maintenance, operation, and planning. Our Fellows gained hands-on experience in project management, cost and demand analysis, data analysis, and hybrid transit solutions, providing a comprehensive understanding of the technological, logistical, and analytical elements that drive the RTA’s efficiency. This visit perfectly aligns with our mission to connect students with real-world STEM applications and inspire them to pursue impactful careers. At STEM NOLA | STEM Global Action, we are excited to share insights from Wade Zhou’s recent article in Learner Education, which highlights the growing importance of STEM degrees (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) in today's job market. Zhou reveals that graduates with STEM degrees earn 30-40% more than their peers with liberal arts degrees, a trend driven by both the increasing demand for STEM professionals and rising college costs. The '2024 Female Students and STEM Report', co-published by YouScience and Ford Next Generation Learning (Ford NGL), highlights the urgent need to close the career exposure gap for female students in STEM fields. Analyzing data from 233,000 female middle and high school students, the report reveals substantial gaps in exposure to high-demand careers such as advanced manufacturing, computer technology, and engineering. These gaps point to the necessity of early and targeted interventions to boost female students' interest and participation in STEM careers. NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration has given $3.8 million to eight institutions through its Minority University Research and Education Program (MUREP) to create new learning opportunities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) for high school students. These MUREP Aerospace Academy (MAA) projects will help inspire students from underserved communities by offering hands-on experiences and interaction with STEM professionals. For example, Florida Atlantic University will take students on field trips and provide mentorship, while the University of Central Florida will host engineering design challenges inspired by NASA's Martian rovers. Each institution will use the funds over three years to create unique programs that focus on NASA’s themes and encourage students to explore STEM careers. STEM NOLA shares a similar mission of exposing, engaging, and inspiring future innovators, creators, makers, and entrepreneurs in grades K-12 through STEM-based activities. These MUREP projects align with that goal by providing resources and opportunities that help students build skills in science and engineering, preparing them for future careers.
