About us

Hansel Clothing's mission is to bring joy through art, by making clothes that connect you to inner kid. Our upcycled apparel and one-of-a-kind handpainted jackets combine classic workwear silhouettes that keep you comfortable with color-punched designs that keep your wardrobe feeling fresh. Central to Hansel's purpose is a second-hand sourcing commitment and #slowfashion ethos that helps us to make beautiful things while doing our part to reduce textile waste and overflow in America's thrift stores. The result: earth-conscious, everyday wear for the studio, office, and everywhere in-between. Founded in 2019 by St. Louis native Mikaela Clark, we've since had two sold-out capsule collections with Urban Outfitters' Urban Renewal, have a retail stockist in Time Square, and have been featured on Vice, Man Repeller, Mollie's Makes UK Craft Magazine, Outdoor Voices, and pulled for the 2020 reboot of Gossip Girl on HBOMax. We offer commissions, customizations and wholesale opportunities.

I never understood what people meant when they'd describe a ~positive~ experience as "humbling," until I began partnering with the Brooklyn Museum. Last weekend I lead a live denim customization at their Juneteenth event, helping attendees learn how to upcycle denim pieces from their own closets into new creations; and seeing people ages six to sixty-something approach a new skill with nervousness and insecurity and leave with a sparkling confidence in their capability is a metamorphosis I would pay to see every day of my life. Similarly, at the Upcycled Fashion workshop I taught last November, I watched a seasoned art teacher of many years, go from defeated at struggling to thread his needle during our hand sewing lesson, to exclaiming: "Wow. This is so empowering..." after mending a tear in denim, all on his own. My passion, in all I do, but especially through Hansel Clothing, LLC, is to share art and joy with others; and seeing that passion grow into a platform for helping others tap into their own joy and bolster their well of self-confidence is the definition of "humbling." This practice never stops teaching me! I'm so grateful.

I'm so honored to share the Brooklyn Museum has asked me and Hansel Clothing, LLC back to do some live denim customization at their Juneteenth celebration: Saddles and Soul, on Saturday, June 15th. What a joy! As an artist, a black woman, and the great (x5) granddaughter of a black cowboy, I could not feel more honored or internally aligned with this invitation. Entry is free with a ticket to the museum, so please, tell your New York friends and join us for a celebration of Black culture and liberation. Who's up for round TWO?! https://lnkd.in/gwVgCxFm

I am so overjoyed to share Hansel Clothing will be back at the Brooklyn Museum providing live denim customization at their annual Juneteenth Celebration this summer, June 15th. Sharing the joy, and accessibility, of prolonging the life of our garments through up-cycling with the Brooklyn community is an opportunity I hold with great appreciation and respect. New York friends, I hope to see you there! https://lnkd.in/g_kJ_7K6

I'm so excited to share with friends and former colleagues who have shared in the journey of my passion project, Hansel Clothing, LLC, that I've been invited by Brooklyn Museum to lead an Upcycled Fashion Workshop at the end of the Thanksgiving holiday! At the start of 2021 I took down a goal: to use the arts to contribute to my community more intentionally. I can't recall exactly what prompted the aim, but I'm sure it was informed by my mom's many aphorisms related to finding your vocational calling in life: "What does the world need?" she'd say, "OK, and what do you love to do? That is how you contribute to society." (A paraphrased quote I hope I'm doing justice). Regardless of how it came to be, my intention was clear, and to see it coming to fruition has me believing in the validity of manifestation (and persistence, and serendipity, and patience) after all. I can't wait to close out my fall holiday educating local Brooklynites about the climate impacts of fast fashion and teaching valuable skills like hand-sewing and garment customization. I'm very honored. More here, if you're local and interested: https://lnkd.in/eNtpExPJ (EDIT: A friend of mine just alerted me that this is now sold out. I'm sad I didn't share earlier! Hope to offer a round two in the new year for any who missed it)
