Waffles has served as photographer and contributor for our sister station since 2021, capturing the unique spirit of the North Texas music scene. We're honored to be one of 57 nonprofits chosen as a 2024 generational learning grant partner by Texas Mutual Insurance Company. The grant is part of an initiative that provides holistic wraparound support for working families, which is a great fit for our KERA Kids team: the grant will support our Ready To Learn early childhood education program in Bachman Lake and West Dallas. The program is built on an intergenerational, STEM-based, research-backed model that helps create Learning Neighborhoods, areas where learning takes place anywhere, anytime. This month we're sharing 50th anniversary shoutouts from a few former KERA News 90.1 FM staff members who helped shape who we are today. Abby Goldstein got her start at KERA in 1989 as a part-time host of NPR's All Thing Considered. Then she led the radio station for six years as program director starting in 2000. Today is the 50th anniversary of KERA News 90.1 FM! 🍾 This month we're sharing a few anniversary shoutouts from former KERA News 90.1 FM staff members who helped shape who we are today, and Bob Ray Sanders was here in the beginning. He helped pull the switch on July 11, 1974, that launched the radio station. The Fort Worth native was a reporter for 'Newsroom' in 1972 on KERA TV – the show where he and Jim Lehrer got their starts – then went on to serve as manager of KERA Radio, VP/program director of KERA TV, and host and producer of the station’s award-winning program 'News Addition.' He also became a Fort Worth Star-Telegram editor and senior columnist. Here's to serving North Texas for 50+ more!
