♻🗑The plastic problem Did you know that the plastic dumped in our oceans eventually ends up as microplastic in our food? Or that the global CO2 emissions of just plastic are equivalent to those of the entire country of Japan, which is the 5th largest CO2 emitter in the world? According to some sources, the plastic market size surpassed the $600B threshold between 2022 and 2023, and continues to grow: we must do something. And we are. MacroCycle Technologies is revolutionizing the plastic recycling market by recycling lower-grade plastic, starting with PET and polyester, into virgin-grade PET, without green premium nor carbon emissions. MacroCycle believes that plastic recycling can eliminate our plastic dependency from fossil fuels and keeping the plastics out of the environment, allowing society to enjoy the benefits without the harms of plastic. Follow us and our journey to reduce the plastic problem, one bottle and one t-shirt at the time. #plastic #recycling #zerocarbon

Circular Plastics. Zero Carbon.
About us
At MacroCycle, we revive end-of-life plastics. We will protect our world through our circular, sustainable, zero-carbon plastic upcycling process. With leading experts in polymer chemistry and plastics engineering from MIT, ETH Zurich and Politecnico di Milano on our team, we take plastic waste in the form of bottles, food trays and polyester textiles, and produce our first product, virgin-grade mPET (MacroCycle-PET) resin. All with zero carbon emissions, through MacroCycle's net-zero and efficient low energy process. MacroCycle Technologies is excited to also welcome the Business interns for the summer! Kenneth, our Polyester Supply Chain Analyst intern, is an MIT rising junior from Kenya, studying Mechanical Engineering and Art & Design. At MacroCycle, he is tasked with mapping the polyester supply chain in the country. Beatrice, our Client Acquisition intern, is an MIT rising junior from Italy, studying Management and Mathematics. This summer she is working on prospecting potential client companies whose values and mission align with MacroCycle's. Annabella, our Finance intern, will be pursuing her MBA at MIT Sloan in the fall and previously spent the last five years as a public impact investor at Wellington Management. She is excited to map out the company’s financial pathways for capital projects. We look forward to working with them to achieve our recycling goals! #PET #upcycling #plastic

MacroCycle Technologies is excited to welcome the technical summer interns! Katelyn, our Polymer Synthesis intern, is a rising junior at MIT studying Chemistry & Biology. Her background in polymer synthesis will help Macrocycle advance in chemical recycling R&D. Akorfa, our Supply Logistics and Pilot plant intern, is a rising junior studying Chemical Biological Engineering at MIT. This summer she is assisting the technical team in setting up our pilot plant and extracting volatiles from our final product. Additionally, she is working with the business team by mapping out our international supply chain for PET waste. Helen, our Recycling Engineering intern, is a rising junior at Tufts University studying chemical engineering. Her research interests lie in the fields of materials science and environmental sustainability. She will be working on separation methods of PET recycling. We look forward to working with them to achieve our recycling goals! #PET #upcycling #plastic

Proud of our friends at GreenLabs Recycling who keep pushing the waste collection boundaries to make the Boston area more circular. Excited to be part of the solution as we convert their collected plastic waste bound for incineration into virgin-grade PET!
Did you know that traditional single-stream recycling haulers do not recycle anything that looks like a lab product? To learn more about what happens to #labplastic on the back end, watch this short #documentary. Thanks to Michael LaRhette, Nicholas T. Charlton and the amazing team at LabCentral along with Veolia North America, the MassBio team: Craig Carew Steve Powell, Paul Cosgro and so many more for your support in making this happen! #greenlabs #recycling #boston #massachusetts #localrecycling

MacroCycle Technologies is excited to welcome Andrés A. Granados Fócil to the MacroCycle family as a Senior Pilot Plant Engineer! Andrés is a Material Scientist and Reaction Engineer from MIT's Román-Leshkov group. After obtaining his PhD from Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana in Mexico City, he used that knowledge to then implement technologies for converting wet waste into fuels and chemicals as a Research Scientist at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. During his Post-doc at MIT, he focused on addressing new catalytic strategies for plastic waste chemical upcycling where he designed and built high-temperature and high-pressure flow reactors to achieved optimum experimental design focused on commercial scale-up. We are excited to bring Andrés' expertise into MacroCycle as we scale up our technology from lab scale to a 200,000 bottles per year pilot! #upcycling #pilot #scaleup

Earlier this week, MacroCycle Technologies was awarded the inaugural Great Global Innovation Challenge prize at the first ever ClimaTech Live Week in Boston. From a pool 50+ global startups, and after 2 rounds of judging, including a live AI judge (see below for the video), we were announced as the inaugural winners alongside AeroShield Materials! Thank you Tod Hynes, Daniela G., Alejandro Sevilla and everyone else involved for organizing such a great event and overall conference. And thank you Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, New Energy Nexus, Brian Halligan, and Propeller for sponsoring the prizes. These community events are key to enabling the partnerships required to create a more sustainable future. We know we benefitted as MacroCycle was able to acquire additional customers interested in incorporating recycled plastics into their products. The team is looking forward to the next event! #ClimateWeek #Upcycling #AIJudge

Plastics are very durable, affordable and flexible materials. Why? To a good part because the machinery making them has become extremely sophisticated over the last half century. NPE 2024 was nothing short of impressive. 1 million sqft of exhibit space with 2,000 companies exhibiting their plastic processing machinery. Talk about heavy industry. Other interesting insights: rPET from mechanical recycling is still an issue for many packaging companies. The color is off, and melt flow behavior is varying, leading to 2x the amount of unusable waste produced. Virgin-like material is urgently needed. The good news: a good amount of these high tech shredders, sorters, extruders, filters, molders, and online analytics are very useful for advanced recycling as well. And they can be run on 100% green electricity. At MacroCycle, we're excited to tap into this decades-old expertise and apply it to next-generation plastic recycling! ♻
