This week in 1967, US Army sergeants Leonard Safford and Ulysses Harris were arrested for espionage conspiracy. Using a covert camera provided by Soviet diplomats, they photographed classified documents for money. They were sentenced to a total of 32 years in prison.

This week in 1987, Clayton Lonetree, a Marine guard at US Embassy Moscow, was sentenced to 30 yrs in prison for espionage. Recruited by a female Russian translator at the US Embassy, Lonetree gave the KGB floor plans of US Embassies in Moscow and Vienna and other classified information.

This week 1960, GRU Col. Oleg Penkovsky became a high-level Soviet asset for the CIA and MI6. Disillusioned with the Soviet regime, he began spying for the West and provided key info that helped defuse the Cuban missile crisis, but he was arrested & later executed by the KGB.

U.S. startups should be wary of knowledge theft disguised as investment. “We continue to see growth in this area,” NCSC Director Michael Casey told Marketplace Morning Report in an interview broadcast today.   “Our adversaries have shifted tactics over time….They’ve actually been doing this for a little while. But we see them doing it more and more. And also moving to mask some of their investments. It’s no longer just direct from the adversary country or through a person who’s obviously associated with the adversary country. #OTD 1981, convicted spy Christopher Boyce was recaptured by FBI and US Marshals in WA state after escaping from federal prison in CA and carrying out 17 bank robberies. He had been serving a 40-yr sentence for passing classified satellite technology information to the Soviets.
