SVP of Gas Operations William Edward Mojica and VP Chief DE&I Officer Carlos Ayala discussed NiSource's involvement in the MachH2 hydrogen hub at the HISPANICS IN ENERGY Midwest Hydrogen Hub Forum in Chicago last month. William highlighted technical advancements and infrastructure developments needed to make the hydrogen hub a reality while Carlos shared how the project aligns with NiSource's commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. The forum provided a platform for robust discussions, networking and exchange of innovative ideas needed for a clean energy transition that will reach all communities, particularly those historically underserved. NiSource is exploring the role hydrogen can play in the energy transition. In addition to the hydrogen hub, NiSource has also launched a hydrogen blending project at its Monaca, PA training facility to evaluate the impact of blending hydrogen and natural gas.

Recently, NiSource and NIPSCO team members partnered with volunteers from The Wetlands Initiative, The Nature Conservancy in Indiana, LAKE COUNTY PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT, Indiana University Northwest and Little Calumet River Conservation Collaborative to sow thousands of wetland plants across two acres at the MLK South Wetland in Gary, IN. This event is part of a larger vision to revitalize and restore the Little Calumet River floodplain including the Chase Street Complex. The Complex is an 800-acre natural space along an urban flood control corridor in the Calumet region of Northwest Indiana. The NiSource Charitable Foundation is also providing important financial support for these efforts. NiSource team members are passionate about supporting their communities through volunteering, and we celebrate those who go above and beyond. We call them our 'Super Volunteers.' Gas Field Engineer Jessica Thomas, based in Indiana, is our latest Super Volunteer. She goes above and beyond by dedicating her time to various charitable causes outside of work. Jessica actively volunteers with the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) at her daughters' school, helps her husband's business serve as a drop-off location for the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana and Toys for Tots during the holidays, participates in St. Baldrick's Foundation fundraisers and has helped build a home for Habitat for Humanity. Jessica says her motivation to volunteer stems from a desire to positively impact her community. "I love contributing to the community and recently began volunteering with the PTO at my daughters' school, as they rely on volunteers to support their students and mission," she said. "I also enjoy sharing my perspective with the school administration and fellow parents while being more involved with my daughters at school events." Jessica finds fulfillment in the connections and experiences she gains from volunteering. "I enjoy many things about volunteering, but what I enjoy the most is getting out of my comfort zone," she said. "It's an opportunity to do something new, meet new people and build new relationships on a personal and professional level." Reflecting on her volunteering experiences, Jessica encourages others to consider volunteering and offers practical advice on how to get started. "Find a nonprofit you are passionate about and see how you can volunteer, or check out your town's official website for opportunities," she said. Recently, NiSource was recognized as the "Out of the Box" awardee by the University of Illinois Chicago for exceeding its target in monarch conservation by 33%. The award further recognizes NiSource's efforts to align the CCAA with the company’s Biodiversity Commitment. In the 2023 program year, NiSource implemented 8,013 adopted acres, conducting monitoring at 70 plots with an average of 98 milkweed stems and 38% nectar plant cover per habitat acre. NiSource also developed 20 biodiversity management plans for Key Biodiversity Areas noting strong alignment with the CCAA's conservation measures. This recognition is a testament to NiSource's successful year of Monarch CCAA and biodiversity implementation and its ongoing commitment to transforming rights-of-way into pollinator habitats.
