On September 11, our agency remembers those lost and reflects on the importance of ensuring that the attacks are never forgotten. In 2002, the Port Authority contacted our conservation lab to conserve, frame and mount the large flag that flew on the World Trade Center Plaza on the day of the attack. The polyester flag was covered in dust, had some small tears, and had melted in places due to the intense heat. But textile conservator Sarah Stevens knew her team could help. “It was a straightforward treatment. It wasn't too horribly damaged," she said. The project was carried out in our Peebles Island lab outside of Albany. Stevens, retired textile lab head Deborah Trupin, and interns and part-time staff Ruth Potter and Hyun Sook Lee spent hours working on the 7 by 11.5-foot flag. Stevens and her team traveled to New York for installation in 2003. Working with representatives from the company that fabricated the flag's frame, they installed the flag to commemorate the second anniversary of the attacks. It hung there until 2015, when the Port Authority moved to a new location. It's mounted there today, commemorating those lost on September 11 and honoring the bravery of the first responders and other heroes of that day. More than 20 years after completing this project, Stevens still gets emotional when looking back on it. "It's important to remember what happened that day. I remember, at the time, thinking it would be incredible to contribute to that."
