Ruozhu Feng loves traveling, spending time with her partner and fur babies (cat Erdan and dogs Sixi and Wukong)—and tackling difficult challenges. As a materials scientist at PNNL, Feng investigates what kinds of organic molecules can be used in redox flow batteries, which use electrolytes dissolved in liquid to store energy. One day, such batteries could be used alongside renewable energy sources like wind turbines and solar panels to support the power grid. 🌬️☀️ Feng will soon be conducting experiments in PNNL’s newest facility, the Grid Storage Launchpad (GSL), with access to powerful instruments aiding her search for new molecules that can be used in flow batteries. "I see myself as a fundamental researcher trying to understand how things work," she says. The GSL will also have space to apply Feng’s work and test new battery technologies. "I would be really excited to see one of my research results in a real-world application," she says. 🧑🔬🖥️ Feng started at PNNL as a postdoc in 2018 after completing her PhD in chemistry at Washington University in St. Louis. When not researching organic molecules, she works on another challenge of great interest at our U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national lab: researching ways that newly emerging AI technology can make our work more efficient. "I'm very excited about trying to use AI in our research," she says.
