Zambia’s National Malaria Elimination Centre has an ambitious goal: to ensure that every suspected #malaria case is tested by a rapid diagnostic test or microscopic examination of a blood smear. 🔬 To help reach this target, the PAMO Plus project, led by PATH and funded by the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative, supported the Ministry of Health of Zambia with an innovative new approach to expand testing and treatment access: proactive community case management, or ProCCM. Through ProCCM, health workers proactively conduct weekly visits to homes within their communities to: 🔎 Identify people with malaria symptoms. 💉Offer diagnostic tests. 🚑 Provide treatment or referral to those with confirmed malaria cases. One community member said, “This idea of visiting door to door is good because when [the health worker] visits he will test us and find us with malaria. [In the past,] I stayed home with it. Now, I will be helped even if I don’t go to the hospital.” Still, there's a risk ProCCM may place a greater burden on community health workers than other models. Recently declared a public health emergency by World Health Organization, Mpox continues to pose a significant health challenge in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The spread of Mpox into new regions and among different age groups raises concerns about transmission dynamics and potential co-infection risks, particularly with HIV. Our team in DRC is directly supporting the Emergency Operating Center and working closely with local partners and authorities to enhance Mpox surveillance, diagnosis, and treatment across the affected regions. By strengthening multisectoral coordination, improving diagnostic capacities, and developing advanced data visualization tools inspired by our successful malaria dashboards, we aim to provide a comprehensive and effective response to this evolving threat. We remain committed to supporting the DRC and ensuring the safety of our staff as we navigate these challenges, with every step informed by data, grounded in local context, and focused on saving lives.

I am energized by the inspiring discussions at the PATH KENYA led USAID Nuru Ya Mtoto project "Best Practice Sharing and Learning Forum". As I reflect on our time together, I am filled with renewed purpose.  The forum exemplified what we at PATH Kenya hold dear - that learning is not just a practice, but our culture. Throughout the sessions, I witnessed the commitment to continuous improvement in action. The innovative approaches and impactful strategies shared by our partners and team members showed how far we have come in our HIV response in Western Kenya. Thank you to all participants for the valuable insights shared this week. Here's to applying these learnings and creating an even greater impact in the years to come!

The uptake, persistence, and effective use of #PrEP has steadily increased as new products enter the market the market and differentiated models bring PrEP closer to those who need it. But with stagnating or decreasing donor resources, we must now ask: How do we ensure sustained access to PrEP and broader HIV prevention services? At #AIDS2024, we explored this question with AVAC and UNAIDS by defining what a sustainable end state for HIV prevention and PrEP looks like. Presenters noted that sustainability should be done progressively—with a focus on efficiency, equity, and quality—and through a whole-of-system approach that brings together communities, countries, donors, and the private sector. The session also highlighted promising approaches to building a sustainable PrEP program: from systematically integrating PrEP into PHC facilities in Ukraine, to applying a total market approach in Vietnam, to leveraging existing government resources to transition from donor-driven to domestically financed public-sector PrEP in South Africa. To advance sustainable PrEP programs that #PutPeopleFirst, we'll need: 🔸 Full PrEP method mix that promotes choice. 🔸Investment in differentiated and demedicalized PrEP models, focusing on community, pharmacy, and private-sector-led models. 🔸Integration with primary health care. 🔸Engagement with stakeholders to lower the price of PrEP and stimulate markets and demand. #HIVPrevention

We are delighted to share that a photo from PATH India's USAID Saksham project was named a Finalist in the 2024 #WorkWithUSAID Photo Contest! 📸 Niloy Jyoti Talukdar's photo depicts a moment in the MAAdol drive, a Saksham initiative in Assam to increase access to the government's Wage Compensation Scheme for pregnant women in tea garden communities. 🌿🍵 This campaign has institutionalized collaboration between the departments of health and labor, tea management, and other stakeholders to improve MNCH outcomes in the region. Special thanks to our USAID Saksham partner Piramal Swasthya for implementing the MAAdol drive's transformative work on the ground and to USAID India for their constant guidance, support, and acknowledgement of our efforts.
