Cheers to 10 years! Since 2013, South Kent Wind has invested over $6.5 million into the Chatham-Kent Community Foundation to support the South Kent Wind Community Fund. Over $2.5 million of the amount invested has been distributed through grants to nonprofits and charities serving the local community. Yesterday, the South Kent Wind team gathered with landowners, the mayor and ward councilors, vendors and their families, and local supporters to celebrate a decade of collaboration. We’re working alongside landowners, environmental consultants, and a local saguaro farm to preserve Arizona’s iconic desert landscape. 🌵 Minimizing the environmental impact of SunZia, the largest clean energy infrastructure project in U.S. history, involves extensive efforts and community collaboration. However, the results are worth it. We are relocating thousands of saguaros rather than simply cutting them down – safeguarding our collective ecological heritage. Happy anniversary, Spring Valley Wind! We want to recognize folks like Assistant Facility Manager Tom Ashby who are the engine of our nation’s clean energy economy. Joining Pattern Energy after a long career in the coal industry, Tom has remained intrigued by the constantly evolving technology in the world of wind. "There's never a typical day," he laughed. His role as a facility manager keeps life exciting and consistently provides learning curves that keep him on his toes. His days are split between management and technical tasks, from downtime reporting and safety assessments to climbing the 80-meter turbines to complete bore scoping of gearboxes and main bearings. “That’s what’s great about this job—I get to go out into the field and climb turbines.” His role provides the opportunity to protect the Nevada desert's local wildlife, including antelope, badgers, foxes, mountain lions, and golden eagles. The nearby Rose Guano Cave is home to tens of thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats, which fly through Spring Valley and often require the site to suspend activity. “Pattern’s commitment to the environment is impressive,” he said. “We have people in place who care very much about the local wildlife.” Ely’s arid climate is unforgiving, with some of the most extreme day-night temperature differences in the country. For Tom, that means icing on blades, snow plowing in the winter, and skyrocketing oil and coolant temperatures in the record-breaking summer heat. With 66 turbines across 7,673 acres of land, the climate poses a constant challenge. Tom credits the engineering of the facility’s impressive machines with keeping everything operating through the cold and heat. “It was an eye-opener how efficient these turbines are,” he said. His curiosity and interest in technology keep him connected. “The next big thing for renewables is storage,” he said. “I’d love to learn more about what kind of battery tech is out there.” Tom says Ely is the perfect place for an avid outdoorsman. He spends time bowhunting or practicing archery, riding four-wheelers in the summer, snowmobiles in the winter, camping, and hiking. Tom is also an amateur photographer–camera always in tow.
