✊ 👏 A landmark victory for Land Rights and our planet: 20 Indigenous communities in the Peruvian Amazon secured legal rights to an area three times the size of Manhattan. ➡ This remarkable achievement is the result of an innovative strategy to land titling coordinated by AIDESEP, Rainforest Foundation US, and the regional government. This flexible, Indigenous-led, grassroots approach uses maps and satellite technology and facilitates regional cooperation among neighboring Indigenous groups. Indigenous-titled lands experience less deforestation and protect more biodiversity than any other conservation model, including national parks. Land titles are one of the most effective ways to reduce deforestation in Indigenous peoples’ territory. In fact, titled lands show a 66% reduction in forest cover loss. 🔥🆘 After a surge in the number of fires in July, the situation in the Brazilian Amazon worsened significantly throughout August. Last month alone, over 38,000 fire hotspots were recorded in the region, marking the highest number in the past 14 years, according to data from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE). Data from the Environmental Satellite Applications Laboratory (LASA/UFRJ) reveal that the total burned area in the Brazilian Amazon this year amounts to 12.47 million acres—an area equivalent to Costa Rica and larger than countries like Denmark and Belgium. #AmazonRainforestDay What does the Amazon rainforest mean to the world and to our fight against climate change? 🌳 The Amazon is the world's biggest rainforest. 📍 It spans nine countries and covers some 40% of South America. 📏 It’s around 3.2 million square miles—roughly five times the size of Alaska! 💧 The Amazon's water cycle plays a key role in regulating the world's climate. When the Amazon rainforest is in danger, we all are. 👥 The Amazon rainforest is home to 1.5 million Indigenous people. Rather than being a “pristine wilderness,” it has been shaped by indigenous peoples for tens of thousands of years through practices like forest gardening and soil management. 🔥 But the Amazon rainforest is under threat from fires, deforestation, and climate change. So far in 2024, an area equivalent to Costa Rica has been destroyed by fires. On this Amazon Rainforest Day, We must #Act4Amazonia. ✊🏾🌿

We see the forest as a living being that grows." - Stany López of the Asháninka people, ACONADISH.

🚨Ten years ago, the world was shaken by the murders of four Indigenous leaders from Peru's Saweto community, targeted for their stand against illegal logging. Sadly, since that time, defending the Amazon has only become deadly. ➡️ Latin America remains the most dangerous region for environmental defenders, with Indigenous communities facing the highest risks. Despite being only about 5% of the world’s population, Indigenous peoples accounted for one-third of all global killings of environmental defenders in 2022. ➡️ In Peru alone, at least 35 Indigenous defenders have been murdered since 2013 for protecting the Amazon. Many continue to face threats, including the widows of Saweto, who continue to receive death threats as they demand justice for their slain husbands. ➡️ A recent report highlights the main drivers behind the violence: illegal gold mining, logging, illicit crops (coca), land trafficking, and the criminalization of protest. 🚨 The killings of environmental defenders must stop. We demand justice! Stand with us in calling for an end to the violence and the protection of those who risk everything to defend the Amazon and our planet. #Saweto #IndigenousRights #DefendTheAmazon #JusticeForIndigenousPeoples #JusticeForSaweto

Together, we are building a united front to safeguard the Amazon’s biodiversity and ensure that these efforts have a lasting impact on the ground,” said Gina Ruiz-Caro Rothgiesser, Rainforest Foundation US Western Amazon Director. #Biodiversity #Wildlife #Amazon https://bit.ly/4cCzjK8

🌍 The Amazon is facing severe drought once again, disrupting transportation, isolating entire communities, and pushing wildlife to the brink. Rivers are drying up, leaving Indigenous communities struggling for water and their livelihoods. 🚨 Last year, the Amazon endured one of the most relentless droughts in history, affecting hundreds of thousands of people across the basin. Now, this reality is continuing—and it’s worsening. Climate change isn’t a distant threat; it’s happening now and disproportionately impacting those who have contributed the least to it. "We’re facing an extremely difficult situation; we have no water. The warming has caused the fish to start dying," says Gadiel Fernándo Pereira, Forest monitor from the San Miguel de Cacao Indigenous community. The reality is dire. The world needs to see what’s happening in the Amazon—before it’s too late to act. #AmazonDrought #ClimateCrisis #IndigenousVoices #SaveTheAmazon #ActNow #RainforestFoundationUS
