Holding perpetrators accountable as a means of protecting and supporting survivors is core to RAINN’s 30 years of work for a world free from sexual violence. We’re so proud to have the amicus brief we filed in 2021 used as a powerful example of how no person, regardless of their position of power, should have the authority to discredit, demean and vilify a victim to sway public opinion. On April 23, 2021, RAINN urged the Second Circuit Court of Appeals to consider how a ruling in President Donald Trump’s favor in E. Jean Carroll’s defamation lawsuit against him could have a chilling effect on survivors’ willingness to report sexual assault in the future. Trump claimed that his alleged defamation of Carroll was part of his official job as president. Well, RAINN’s amicus brief argued that Trump’s actions and words couldn’t have had less to do with the job of a president, and that ruling in his favor “would give license to all federal officials to slander and defame their victims with impunity. Such a decision would have a chilling effect on survivors of sexual violence throughout the country and would exacerbate the challenges survivors already face in holding their attackers accountable.” Survivors deserve protection from abusers who seek to silence and defame them. RAINN has helped pass laws that protect survivors in these situations in California, and has active bills to do so in states including Illinois, New Mexico, New York, and Virginia. We are grateful to Del. Karrie Delaney, who also works for RAINN but attended the DNC in her personal capacity as a State Legislator, for carrying the message of RAINN’s amicus brief onto this national stage so that more people know that when powerful offenders are allowed to manipulate public opinion by shaming, degrading, lying, and attacking their victims’ credibility, all victims suffer. #justice #news #spotlight #DNC #DNC2024 #hereforyou #supportsurvivors #actwithrainn

RAINN Consulting Group experts Dr. Sona Kaur, PhD and Dr. Tanya Rawal have a chance to represent RAINN and millions of survivors with a much-needed panel discussion at South by Southwest 2025. Portrayals of sexual violence can have a profound impact on how viewers think about sexual violence, trauma, and victim/survivor experiences. Storytellers who highlight these issues therefore must be committed to ensuring they are being portrayed responsibly. Together, we can get them to the SXSW stage and create safe and trauma-informed sets. 🗳️ Join us and vote today: https://lnkd.in/gghtcdUB #sxsw #sxsw2025

🗓️ On July 27th, 1994 RAINN took the first call on the National Sexual Assault Hotline. Since then we have supported nearly 5M survivors and their loved ones. As we commemorate 30 years of impact, we want to acknowledge the work still left to do and call on people everywhere to join us. Every 68 seconds a person is sexually assaulted in America. Every 9 minutes that person is a child. Together, we can support survivors, raise critical funds, and pursue justice to create a world free from sexual violence. We’re building a community of survivors and allies to help build that world. Join us. 💙 🙌 www.RAINN.org

💡 Let's face the facts, LGBTQ+ youth experience sexual violence at higher rates than the general population. The Trevor Project found that nearly two in five LGBTQ+ young people (39%) reported that they had ever been forced to do “sexual things” that they did not want to do. Rates of forced sexual contact in the past year among LGBTQ+ young people were higher than those in the general population of young people in the U.S. Nearly half of LGBTQ+ young people ages 13-18 (49%) reported that they had been forced to do “sexual things” that they did not want to do in the past 12 months, compared to only 11% of the general population of 13-18 year olds in the U.S. Respondents who reported ever having experienced forced sexual contact were also asked specifically about forced sexual intercourse, with 45% reporting forced sexual intercourse. This data is heart wrenching and demonstrates the need for increased resources and support for this community. We're proud to partner with The Trevor Project to provide a guide on “How to Support LGBTQ Victims and Survivors of Sexual Violence” accessible on our website at the link here. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eTcE5rJa Read the full research at the link below. https://lnkd.in/e_RhcKDt #Research #LGBTQ #Community #PrideInAction

Mental health matters for kids, too. 💙 That's why we at RAINN and Mental Health America partnered together to share this message on #ChildrensMentalHealthAwarenessDay. With teenagers and children spending an average of 5 to 9 hours a day on the internet, they're at risk of online exploitation and increased mental health problems. It's important to protect children's mental health by monitoring kids' online interactions, knowing warning signs, and holding space for conversations with your child. We are frustrated, sad, and heartbroken that NY overturned Harvey Weinstein’s conviction. We are devastated for the survivors of Harvey Weinstein who have seen their testimony used as a legal loophole, and for survivors everywhere whose pursuit of justice has been upended. Survivors deserve better. Survivor advocate and actress, Ashley Judd, and investigative reporter, Jodi Kantor, sat down with CBS News this morning to share their reactions to this overturned ruling. Thank you Ashley for your fight and Jodi for your tenacious reporting. If you or a loved one are a survivor and affected reading this news, we believe you, we are #HereForYou, and we will fight for you. ☎️💬 RAINN and the National Sexual Assault Hotline are here for survivors and their loved ones 24/7 at 800.656.HOPE (4673) or online.rainn.org in English and rainn.org/es in Spanish. Our volunteers at the National Sexual Assault Hotline get thousands of chats and calls every month. For Hotline volunteers like Brittany, RAINN’s thorough training gave her the skills to effectively support survivors and their loved ones. “The training RAINN provides is essential because it's one thing to want to volunteer,” said Brittany, “but it's another thing to feel fully equipped to handle such a task.” One of Brittany’s biggest training takeaways was that not every conversation needs to be solution-oriented. “Every visitor has different needs. I’m just there to be a good listener and adjust to those needs,” Brittany explained. “Some people are looking for a specific resource, but most people just want to be heard and validated; they want to know that they're not alone.” 👉 Read Brittany's volunteer story here: https://lnkd.in/gWVm7Jkz #SAAPM #Volunteer #HereForYou #SAAM #SupportSurvivors #Hotline
