Reality Defender's work in helping brands, executives, and notable names detect deepfakes early to protect their reputation has never been more crucial. And the pressing need for protecting against defamatory AI-driven disinformation was laid bare before the nation last night. When your brand and reputation are the most important factor, you pull out all the stops to protect them. But when anyone can masquerade as yourself or your company, how do you respond? Our recent work in Brand Reputation has been among our most crucial work in our four-plus years as a company, and it will only become more important for months and years to come.

A few weeks ago, former president Donald Trump reposted AI-generated deepfakes and manipulated images of Taylor Swift to Truth Social. These images depicted the pop star and "supporters" endorsing the president in the coming election. Last night, after the presidential debate, the real Taylor Swift gave her highly coveted endorsement to Vice President Kamala Harris. While doing so, Swift cited the aforementioned "AI of ['her']" on Truth Social and her fears around AI, as well as concerns on misinformation and a bevy of issues close to her heart. Myself and the team at Reality Defender will be rolling out our U.S. election coverage and associated plans later this week. Yet for all the hypotheticals, all the incidents leading up to this point, and all the potential for disinformation that generative AI can, has, could, and will bring, one thing we did not expect was the Chekov's Gun of Taylor Swift deepfakes to come back around as a potential tide-turner in an election that only has 54 days to go. As we've said for some time, 2024 will be the year of the deepfake election. By raising concerns on misuse of AI, Taylor Swift brought this issue in front of hundreds of millions of fans and countless more who will certainly hear about it elsewhere — many for the first time.

It appears that the penalty for deepfaking the sitting president at scale is $1 million. Regardless of political figure or party affiliation, this seems like a relatively low figure for causing intentional disinformation with the express intent of dissuading citizens from voting — all done with a voice #deepfake. I implore our elected officials to reconsider the ramifications of such harmful incidents on a macro and micro scale and adjust the penalties accordingly — lest they actually want to put a comparatively paltry price on spreading such disinformation within reach of bad actors.
