Last week Rise East partners celebrated the soft launch of Black Cultural Zone's new Welcome Center, a resource hub that will provide housing supports and job resources to East Oakland residents. The Welcome Center is among the first coordinated investments the Rise East initiative has supported to reinvigorate commercial corridors in the 40x40 neighborhood. As Councilmember Treva Reid said, "we know that as we Rise East, Oakland will rise." https://lnkd.in/gje7k-FY

Reggie and Nicole Borders had sold slices of her homemade pound cake nearly every Sunday morning at the corner of 73rd Ave. and Foothill Blvd. in Deep East Oakland since 2020 when they were among the first local business owners who helped turn a vacant lot into what’s known today as “Liberation Park.” https://lnkd.in/gsYM4cpJ

The Black population of East Oakland will be reduced to only 10% of the overall neighborhood by 2040 if the current rate of displacement continues, according to Carolyn Johnson. The Rise East collective at Oakland Thrives is working to stop this trend. Latinos in the Mission District have used a collective impact strategy to push back against similar displacement pressures in San Francisco. Yesterday’s rain couldn’t stop us from sharing our Promise Neighborhood stories with esteemed leaders from Rise East, including Black Cultural Zone, East Oakland Youth Development Center, Roots Community Health Center, Councilmember Treva Reid, and the BROTHERHOOD OF ELDERS NETWORK.
