All summer long, BXers rolled up their sleeves at volunteering events around the globe! A few highlights: 🦪🌳 In #NYC, our volunteers restored oysters at Billion Oyster Project and worked on a park renewal project with Riverside Park Conservancy ⚒🛠 In #London, employees teamed up with The Childhood Trust and London Play Design to help repair the city’s iconic adventure playgrounds. 🧸🇯🇵 In #Tokyo, the crew visited Playground of Hope to help provide children in at-risk communities with access to essential outdoor play equipment.

Inspiring talk by Sycamore May on the kind of small-scale improvements that make independent farmers lives easier while making our planet healthier and our food systems more sustainable. Thank you for joining Riverside Park Conservancy and sharing your work with our community!

🐥 Last week I went to the beautiful 102nd Street Field House community space at Riverside Park Conservancy for a lecture by Sycamore May and learned so much! She spoke about her sustainability work at Handsome Brook Farms ensuring eggs are farmed sustainably and supporting farmers with essential capital projects to continue their work while also helping the surrounding environment. 🌳 I loved the example she spoke about where they helped farmers in trial and error to plant the right trees to create wind buffers, reduce ammonia smells, and create shade and shelter for hens so they use more of the pasture. In some cases, these trees (such as elderberry trees) helped create another diversifying revenue stream in their operations. 📕 This reminded me of Gabe Brown speaking about the importance of diversifying revenue streams for farmers in his book Dirt to Soil (if you haven't read, it's a must!) and making small improvements for big impact! 🏡 I am constantly inspired by the work being done in the industry, and by connecting with those near me. Thank you Riverside Park Conservancy for creating a beautiful community space to have these important conversations!

Thank you to Morgan Stanley for volunteering in Riverside Park during their Global Volunteer Month! Working side by side with Conservancy staff, they completed a variety of volunteer projects across our 6 miles, including weeding, pruning, painting, assisting at our 95th Street Compost Compound, and picking up garbage. Plus, they helped us prepare for the goats’ return at 143rd Street! We are so appreciative of Morgan Stanley’s support – thank you once again for joining us.

And now for my favorite news story of the year! Come out next week and help us welcome this year's goat crew to their new job site - a weedy slope in West Harlem, just right for chomping!

🔥 It's a hot one out there! The U.S. is sizzling in a dangerous heat wave, and New York City's temperatures are soaring above 90°F. 🥵 As we face this extreme heat challenge, consider the cool oasis that natural areas can provide! 🌳🌿 Check out this map showing NYC's land surface temperatures—it's clear that cooler (blue) areas often correlate with natural spaces. Our 2022 study found that forested areas can be up to 13°F cooler than nearby landscaped trees during scorching summer days. This weekend, why not seek shelter under a shady tree canopy? 🌳 And explore our Cooling Cities report to learn more about how natural areas can help us beat the urban heat! 🌇💧https://bit.ly/3XsP8PF

New Yorkers will feel the impact of Mayor Adams’ $55M+ proposed cuts to NYC Department of Parks & Recreation immediately. Trash won't be picked up, lawns won't be mowed, trees won't be trimmed and parks in every borough will become less safe and accessible.
