As summer winds down, it's time to bid farewell to our incredible #interns. Over the past 12 weeks, these talented students have been learning, testing, challenging the status quo, and making a real impact at Rivian. Last week, they showcased the fruits of their labor at our annual Intern Showcase, a company-wide event where interns present their projects to our employee community. Jefferson Zhang, an Electrical and Computer Science Intern, developed a modular, automated program for triaging TCMs (telematics control modules). “This program can run various tests for common failure modes in under 30 seconds, determining if a TCM can be reused,” he explained. “By diagnosing and recycling TCMs three times faster, we significantly improve part utilization.” Special Projects Engineering Intern, Miles Batley, designed, analyzed, and built a pedal control robot for vehicle drive cycle testing. His system, integrating motors, gearboxes, force sensors, and custom-machined linkages, brings new levels of precision and automation to a previously manual process. The ingenuity, strategic thinking and problem-solving demonstrated by our interns were truly inspiring. Thank you to all our #interns! Meet Richard Serrano: A Gainesville, GA native, proud Latino, and first in his family to attend university. We are grateful to have had him join us for the past 8 months as a Manufacturing Engineering Co-Op Intern at our manufacturing plant in Normal, IL.    Despite previous welding and automotive engineering experience from his Formula SAE team at Kennesaw State, when Richard first joined the battery team for his Co-Op he couldn’t help but feel nervous. “At first, I was scared,” said Richard, “but my manager has been with me all the time mentoring me and has consistently encouraged me to ask questions. I remember one of the first things he told me: he said, ‘The learning curve is going to be incredibly steep. Don’t be afraid to not know something. Be open to learn as much as you can.’”    In these past 8 months, Richard has taken his mentor’s words to heart. With support from his mentors and engineering peers, he has learned, worked on, and driven efficiencies in laser and busbar welding processes we use every day on the main R1 manufacturing line. “These engineers have been here for a while and that’s because they are the most knowledgeable. It’s been super interesting, and I’ve learned so much!” Now that his internship is coming to a close, Richard’s advice to other interns out there is, “there’s no time to be shy or hesitant here. The engineers here will respect your input and treat you like a full-time employee. We are delighted to announce the arrival of Javier Varela as our Chief Operations Officer (COO).  Javier has over 34 years of automotive experience, having spent time at PSA Peugot Citroën (now Stellantis), Toyota, and most recently as Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Chief Executive Officer at Volvo Cars. At Rivian, Javier will be central to the company’s growth and profitability.
