It’s almost September, which means Climate Week NYC is just around the corner. Make sure to save room in your schedule for us on Tuesday, Sept. 24. We’ll be hosting a day of insightful conversations with RMI experts and others at Scandinavia House. We’ll share stories in four sessions on: ➡️ How the private sector, in partnership with RMI, is leading climate action. ➡️ How slashing methane can help hit short-term climate goals. ➡️ How communities across the United States are benefiting from the IRA. ➡️ How we can change hearts and minds in the fight against climate change. Learn more and register: https://bit.ly/4fWgRPD#ClimateAction #ClimateWeekNYC

Landfills are a major source of methane — a highly potent greenhouse gas. Landfill methane also contributes to smog, and is co-emitted with hazardous pollution that can harm the health of nearby communities by worsening respiratory illnesses like asthma, for example. "Once you set [your trash cans] out to be picked up, it’s kind of out of sight and out of mind," said RMI’s Tom Frankiewicz. But "methane is created when organic waste, things like yard waste, food waste, even paper and cardboard," break down in landfills. There are solutions for detecting and managing landfill methane emissions, including monitoring from above with aircraft and satellites, automated gas collection at the landfill, and better landfill covers. But step one should always be to keep organic waste from even making it to the landfill by reducing, recycling, or composting it instead. Colorado is working hard to cut methane pollution across sources, and RMI is thrilled to be participating in the technical working group to inform a new landfill methane standard. Learn more about how Colorado is one of the states leading the way in terms of reducing landfill methane pollution: https://bit.ly/3Z0m96m #Colorado #Methane #WasteManagement #Emissions #Composting #Recycling

An all-electric, high-performance HVAC system won’t fit in a backpack, but it’s still an important part of the K–12 school experience. These systems improve air quality, adapt to new cooling needs, reduce costs by enhancing efficiency, and yes, help combat climate change by reducing carbon emissions. New funding opportunities give school district leaders a generational opportunity to make HVAC investments to better support their students health and learning and contribute to their communities. Time may be running out for summer reading, but you can still learn more about how all-electric, high-performance HVAC systems serve students and learn how to fund these investments: https://bit.ly/46XqF7Q #Education #HVAC #Decarbonization #Electrification #BackToSchool

Third Derivative is thrilled to announce the launch of our new Industrial Innovation Cohorts initiative supported by a $2M grant from The Lemelson Foundation. This initiative is designed to tackle the impact of heavy industry, which accounts for 30% of global carbon emissions — half of which is caused by the production of cement, concrete, iron, steel, chemicals, and plastics. By providing market insights, industry connections, and expert support, we will help startups in these areas scale and deploy new technologies for industrial decarbonization. Applications are open! Join this transformative effort to reshape heavy industry💡 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eq9Aff9K #ClimateTech #Decarbonization #Innovation

Feeling the heat? You’re not alone! As average yearly temperatures continue to rise for the average person, many regions are experiencing more frequent and longer-lasting heat waves.     Keeping people safe from extreme heat will require us to shift to clean energy faster and find ways to improve the efficiency of our cooling infrastructure. The most commonly used air conditioners waste energy, do a poor job of providing comfort by overcooling the air to remove humidity, and ultimately can be too expensive for consumers to operate. We are expected to have an additional 5 billion ACs in operation by 2050, with the fastest growth in the residential sector, driving a 2.5 times jump in cooling energy.    It is vital that we transition to energy efficient air conditioning technologies and refrigerants that have minimal global warming impact, and construct well-insulated buildings made from advanced materials that can cool a building even when it’s sunny and hot outside.     RMI, Clean Cooling Collaborative, and other partners formed the Global Cooling Efficiency Accelerator to help inform policy actions and address barriers to the adoption of super-efficient air conditioners. https://bit.ly/4fSP0zJ #CleanEnergy #EnergyEfficiency #HVAC

States across the U.S. are in a race to capture the benefits of the rapidly expanding clean energy economy. With renewable energy and clean tech growing faster than ever, the question remains: Are states doing enough to secure these opportunities? To truly succeed, states must help residents, businesses, and organizations take advantage of clean energy incentives, creating a powerful investment engine that attracts federal and private investments while keeping local dollars in the local economy. While eye-catching investments are crucial, it's just as important to focus on opportunities that improve individual homes and businesses. Most of these opportunities come through tax credits — dollars that can stay within the community rather than being sent to the federal government. States have a long way to go in reaching their full investment potential, but if they focus on the sectors with the most opportunity, they can increase their chances of winning the race to the top. The current ammonia production process relies mainly on natural gas, resulting in high emissions — about 2.3 tons of CO2 per ton of ammonia produced — and tying ammonia prices to volatile natural gas prices. Also, ammonia production centers in the United States tend to be located near natural gas resources on the Gulf Coast, leading to transportation costs and risks to get ammonia for fertilizers to agricultural end-users in the Midwest. Distributed green ammonia production proposes a new paradigm that uses local renewable energy resources closer to farming communities to create additional price stability, generate local investments, and bring more certainty to the fertilizer market: https://bit.ly/3X0qUdQ #Ammonia #EmissionsReduction #Fertilizer
