Über uns

At the Sierra Club, we believe in the power of togetherness. Together, we remain committed to the fight for a healthy climate built on a foundation of environmental, racial, economic, and gender justice – a future where all people benefit from a healthy, thriving planet and a direct connection to nature. As the climate crisis and deeply entrenched systemic racism all fuel inequity, we will continue to fight for a bold, transformational agenda that recognizes the interconnectedness between our planet, our humanity, and our democracy. By recognizing that our destinies are tied, we continue to name that all things are fundamentally connected, and the overlap between ecology, race, gender, and representative government will move to either advance our collective humanity or to oppress it. Sierra Club is comprised of staff across the country and a network of local chapters that support our grassroots engagement. We are also proud to be a unionized employer, with two labor unions representing more than half of our employees. Please view www.sierraclub.org/careers/ for more information.

Last month, activists protested outside Citigroup's NYC headquarters, calling out the bank for being a main funder of new fossil fuel projects worldwide despite its stated sustainability goals of decarbonizing. Throughout the summer, similar rallies have also addressed weapons manufacturing, oil and gas projects in the Gulf South, and operations in Israel. Advocating for Net Metering and Community Resilience On September 4th, Sierra Club Puerto Rico, alongside Solar United Neighbors, held a pivotal press conference defending Law 10-2024, which protects current net metering credits through 2030. Why Law 10-2024 Matters: Net Metering Program: Established by Law 114 in 2007, it ensures fair compensation for solar energy, with PREPA buying 75% of surplus credits at 10 cents/kWh and the rest benefiting public schools. Impact: Solar capacity in Puerto Rico grew from 88 MW in 2017 to over 400 MW in 2023. Solar systems with batteries cut power outage times by 60%. The solar sector created over 5,000 jobs and could save $20 million annually in fuel costs. 72% of residents support maintaining or expanding net metering policies. Our Advocacy: We mobilized key organizations and received broad media coverage, amplifying our message. This success reflects our strategic approach and commitment to elevating our advocacy efforts. We’re dedicated to reaching new heights in impactful advocacy.

The current forestry workforce is overwhelmingly white. To employ a staff that’s representative of the country, the Forest Service is leaning into partnerships. Among them is the FireDawgs program, which prepares students at historically Black colleges and universities for careers in firefighting. 🔗 https://bit.ly/4cTO5w7 ✍️ Ashira Morris 📷 Jeremy Whigham
