It’s hard to believe it’s already been two weeks since the SPHERE 360 Summit in Nashville. The conference was a delve into the world of Identity Hygiene with presentations and formal conversation by industry experts. There was A LOT covered, but here were some of my favorite parts: 1. Rita Gurevich (SPHERE) and Sam Tang (EY) had a formal conversation around “Strategies for Modern CISO’s”. In the session they: · Emphasized the importance of alignment from the Board to C-Suite to Leadership. · Highlighted the need for tailoring data/information to be a digestible for decision-makers who will be consuming it. · Covered EY’s approach to Identity with the 4 R’s: Readiness, Resilience, Realization, and Remediation. · Urged companies to shift from the legacy mentality of point-in-time audits to continuous environment assessment. · Ended with a very important question leadership should be able to answer, “What is the cost of doing nothing, versus the cost of doing something?” with respect to Identity Hygiene. 2. Avinash Rajeev (PwC) and John Klinck (SPHERE) discussed common pitfalls in Identity Projects, emphasizing the importance of data cleanup and account discovery. They also stressed the need for measurable progress within any Identity Program so that the costs are justifiable. These programs are often not visible to leadership and it’s important to bring light to the work being done. 3. Elizabeth Butwin Mann (EY), Julie Talbot-Hubbard (Cyderes), and Rita Gurevich (SPHERE) inspired everyone with their session titled, “Women Legends in Cybersecurity”. They shared their experiences within their storied careers, the challenges they faced and ended with a call to action on the importance of hiring a diverse technology / cybersecurity team. 4. Kirsten Davies (Unilever) and Brandon Traffanstedt (CyberArk) challenged traditional paradigms in their session titled, “IAM != PAM != Risk Reduction”. Some of my absolute favorite snippets from this session: · Anyone who has access that a Threat Actor would be interested in essentially has Privileged Access. · Identity is not the new perimeter. There is no perimeter. It may be the new vector but not really, since it's always been there. · Identity is foundational to defense in depth. Identity plays a part in every depth, it's everywhere. · We already have concepts such as: Just Enough Access, and Just in Time Access. Once a certain level of organizational maturity is reached, we can explore concepts such as: Just in Time Presence (credentials destroyed after use).
