Founded in 1985 by Central Atlanta Progress, the Junior League of Atlanta, Inc. and the Atlanta Parks Commissioner, Trees Atlanta has been a prime force in addressing Atlanta's tree loss, creating increased green space, and conserving the city's trees. Since its beginnings, the primary goals of Trees Atlanta have been to replace trees lost to development, conserve existing trees, protect green space areas, and educate the community’s residents and workers about the many benefits of trees. These actions have resulted in Trees Atlanta becoming one of the most widely known non-profits throughout metro-Atlanta and a highly regarded community steward of our urban environment.

This Saturday marks our fifth and final forest restoration project at Conally Family Cemetary. It’s been a huge privelage to assist Savannah Tello as a forest steward on this site. I lead my first ever project here with 40+ volunteers from tech, and I’ve learned so much about conservation and leadership from working here. When I first visited Conally family cemetery with Sav, the wisteria was so thick most of the graves were inaccessible. Even after the crew cleared much the wisteria, every project we’d uncover headstones from the undergrowth. I’m really hoping this site can continue to be restored for the sake of those laid to rest here.

My colleagues and I spent the last three days representing Trees Atlanta at Cullowhee Native Plant Conference's 40th anniversary in North Carolina. We heard from experts on prescribed fire, moths, bats, watershed management, and fungal dynamics, among many other exciting topics. Just a few of the inspiring speakers we heard from: Heather Holm, author of Pollinators of Native Plants, Lenny Lampel, Natural Resources Supervisor with Mecklenburg County Park, Erin Cord from Bat Conservation International, Lyn Rutherford, Natural Resources Supervisor for City of Chattanooga, and Tradd Cotter best selling author and founder of Mushroom Mountain. Featured in photos: hike in Pathertown and a vertical bog with incredible diversity.

It’s a WRAP 🎬 It’s been an honor to complete my 4th summer with the Youth Tree Team! We’ve had a successful (and fun) seven weeks full of hard work, good times, and long lasting memories. Trees Atlanta has always been home for me! It’s so wonderful that a high school development program continues to allow me to develop as a senior in college. My coordinator position has been the best learning experience yet and i’m excited to do it all again next year. Much love to my YTT family (alumni, i’m talking to you too!)
